The incumbent will be responsible for:

  • Teaching and supervision of French modules at both undergraduate and postgraduate level;
  • Conducting research at a competitive level within the field;
  • Organising and developing modules as required;
  • Academic administration and other duties as determined by the Head of Department;
  • Participating in the department’s strategic initiatives relating to teaching and learning, research and community engagement.
  • Participating in the intellectual and public life of the Department and University

  • A Master’s degree related to French;
  • Teaching experience in French as a foreign language; and/or contemporary Francophone literature; and/or translation at university level;
  • Research outputs appropriate to the post level and/or applicable fields of expertise.



  • A native or near-native ability in the French language;
  • Appropriate language and communication skills, particularly in English.



  • A doctoral degree in one of the above fields;
  • A proven research and publications record in the applicable field;
  • Competency to teach in more than one of the areas offered at our institution (French grammar, French/francophone literature, translation and didactics of French as a foreign language);
  • Postgraduate teaching and supervision experience.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and Umvuzo medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
