About The Job
The CSIR has a vacancy for a Cloud Engineer in the Centre for High Performance Computing (CHPC) area within the National Integrated Cyber-Infrastructure System (NICIS). The incumbent will be responsible to integrate and develop technology to the benefit of the NICIS and its users and actively contribute to the Human Capital Development (HCD) programmes of NICIS. This position is based in Rosebank, Cape Town and will report to CHPC Research Manager

About The Job
The CSIR has a vacancy for a Cloud Engineer in the Centre for High Performance Computing (CHPC) area within the National Integrated Cyber-Infrastructure System (NICIS). Key Responsibilities
- Work in collaboration with researchers/engineers both internal and external to the CSIR, to design HPC and cloud system technologies;
- Design and maintain the NICIS cloud architecture;
- Investigate new CEPH and OpenStack features and versions;
- Deploy and validate CEPH and OpenStack features in the development environment;
- Package new features for deployment in the production environment;
- Assist system administrators with operationalising new features;
- Provide a second line of support for system administrators;
- Co-author documentation and reports for technologies and systems developed or evaluated at the CHPC;
- Provide technical leadership, coaching and mentoring to other staff;
- Participate in human capital development initiatives and training that benefit users and the broader scientific community (e.g., User and staff training, university outreach, student cluster competition).
- Stay up-to-date with emerging cloud technologies and trends to drive innovation
- Ensure cloud environments comply with security and compliance standards.
- Collaborate with development, DevOps, and security teams to ensure smooth integration and compliance.
- A Bachelors degree in computer science/engineering or related fields with at least two years experience in:
- OpenStack
- CEPH
- Ansible
- Linux (RedHat-based advantageous)
- Infrastructure as code tools (Terraform, Pulumi, etc.) and paradigms.
- Understanding of computer networking;
- Strong knowledge of scientific computing;
- Good reporting and writing skills;
- Ability to pick up and learn concepts, technologies quickly and independently.
