Climate Fund Managers (CFM) is a climate-focused blended finance investment manager operating across Africa, Asia, and Latin America. CFM raises and deploys blended climate finance funds, working in partnership to deliver climate-resilient solutions at scale and pace. With over USD 2 billion in assets under management and targeting an additional USD 6 billion, CFM’s private equity and private credit facilities address key areas of climate change mitigation and adaptation, including renewable energy, green hydrogen, energy transmission, water and sanitation, and biodiversity and oceans infrastructure. CFM’s funds are supported by public and private sector organisations, with public capital deployed strategically to balance risk and mobilise private sector capital, enabling investment across the project lifecycle - from development to construction and operation.
Established in 2015, CFM is a joint venture between Dutch development bank FMO and Sanlam InfraWorks of the Sanlam Group of South Africa, with offices in The Hague, Cape Town, Singapore, and Bogotá.
Job Purpose
The Africa Investment Team is looking for a full-time Investment Analyst to support the evaluation of new investment opportunities and the due diligence processes during deal and financing execution. The role will also involve contributing to portfolio monitoring activities.This position offers a unique opportunity to work in an innovative, fast-paced scale-up environment focused on outcomes over activity. Duties and Responsibilities
Initial Deal Analysis:
- Conduct preliminary assessments and screenings of potential deals to determine suitability.
- Develop and interpret project finance models, including use of VBA macros.
Financial Analysis and Due Diligence:
- Assist with the evaluation of new investments, including terms, structures, and risk profiles.
- Conduct comprehensive due diligence, including industry research, competitor analysis, and assessments of management teams.
- Perform detailed financial analysis of prospective investors, including financial statements, ratings, pricing assessments, cash flow projections, and capital structures.
Investment Structuring and Documentation:
- Review financial statements and valuations.
- Create financial models, assess collateral and analyze documentation.
- Work with agreements and equity instruments (e.g., ordinary shares, preference shares, shareholder loans, mezzanine instruments).
- Draft MOUs, joint development agreements, and investment terms
Portfolio Monitoring:
- Monitor performance of existing portfolio investments, ensuring compliance with deal terms and covenants.
- Conduct regular reviews and updates of financials and risk assessments for existing investors.
Market and Industry Analysis:
- Stay informed on market trends, economic conditions, and industry developments that could impact the private equity portfolio.
- Provide insights and recommendations based on market analysis and research of power / energy market/ water and sanitation / energy transition sector dynamics for companies operating across the region.
Reporting and Communication:
- Prepare detailed reports and presentations for internal committees and senior management.
- Communicate effectively with internal stakeholders, including senior management, legal, ESG and compliance teams.
- Monitor portfolio for impairment indicators, manage watchlists, and coordinate with deal teams on restructurings, workouts, and litigation.
Risk Assessment:
- Evaluate investment risk by analyzing information, identifying potential risks, and assessing the likelihood of borrower default.
- Develop detailed memos and risk assessments to support investment recommendations.
- Support the execution of development, primary and secondary market transactions - including new and bolt-on acquisitions for portfolio companies.
Collaboration:
- Work closely with senior associates, portfolio managers, and analysts to support investment decisions.
- Provide ongoing support to portfolio teams on private credit matters.
- Collaborate with cross-functional investment teams across regions.
Qualifications and Experience:
- 3 - 5 years experience in investment analysis, private equity, investment banking, or a related field.
- CFA, Honours or Master’s degree in business, commerce or finance, actuarial science or engineering.
- Strong analytical skills, including proficiency in financial modelling, valuation techniques, and risk assessment.
- Knowledge of markets, processes, policies, ratings tools, financial products, and regulatory frameworks related to private equity.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, for interacting with stakeholders and presenting investment proposals.
- Attention to detail and ability to perform thorough due diligence and analysis.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Proficiency in relevant software and tools, such as Excel, Bloomberg, and financial databases.
- A background in finance, economics, accounting, or a related field is typically required, with relevant work experience in credit analysis or investment management preferred.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact confidently with senior executives, clients, and investors.
