Grow, Innovate, Succeed! We have an incredible opportunity for Cadet’s within the Deck function at I&J in Table Bay Harbour, Cape Town. The purpose of this role is to provide cadets an opportunity to learn and work on-board a fishing vessel. This being the first step to reaching an Officer ranking on-board.

Reporting Structure:

  • Reports to: Marine Manager

Key Performance Areas
Maintenance and Safety:

  • Maintenance work on deck and housekeeping requirements
  • Assist with ensuring that lifesaving and safety equipment is functional

Deck Operations:

  • Assist deck hands with deck operations like preparing for “shoot away” of nets and retrieving nets
  • Repairing of fishing gear

Navigation:

  • Under supervision, assist with steering and navigation of the vessel
  • Involved with safe mooring and anchoring of vessel when entering the port

Port Work:

  • Perform watch keeping duties and bridge watch under guidance and supervision of the 1st Mate
  • Assist Deck Officers with directing crew in loading and discharging cargo
  • Assist with Dry Dock operations

Nautical Preparations:

  • Assist Deck Officers with ensuring that the vessel is fully prepared for the voyage
  • Check and familiarise yourself with the vessel’s route and other information

Records:

  • Assist with maintaining record keeping on vessel like daily taking of position reports, updating of vessel’s nautical charts and logbook
  • Complete tasks as listed in the on-board training record book

What It Takes to Succeed:

Experience that set you up for success:

  • No experience required, previous deck work is advantageous

Qualifications & Certifications that will contribute to your success:

  • Grade 12 certificate
  • CPUT applicants must have completed a minimum S2 or in the process of completing a National Diploma in Maritime Studies Semester (S) courses in deck/nautical studies
  • Internal applicants from I&J must possess a Grade 12. This requirement considers the level of maritime industry experience already held by such applicants

Additional Requirements that will enhance your impact for success:

  • Knowledge of maritime practices and legislation
