Health and Safety Officer

The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the health, safety, and environmental (HSE) standards within the production area, as well as the office spaces. The role involves ensuring that all safety protocols and regulatory compliance are maintained, and implementing safety programmes to prevent accidents and injuries on the factory floor. This is a full-time position with a regular work schedule, including some flexibility to accommodate night shifts or weekends if necessary. The safety will report directly to the Operations Manager.


The successful candidate must have the following:

  • Education:
    • A minimum of a National Diploma or Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Science, or a related field.
    • NEBOSH International General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety (preferred).
    • SAMTRAC (Safety Management Training Course) certification or similar.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum of 3 years of work experience as a Safety Officer in an industrial setting, preferably within a metalwork or manufacturing environment.
    • Proven experience in implementing safety programs, conducting risk assessments, and ensuring compliance with OHS regulations.
  • Skills:
    • In-depth knowledge of the South African Occupational Health and Safety Act and ISO 45001 standards.
    • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
    • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
    • Ability to conduct safety audits and risk assessments.
    • Familiarity with emergency response procedures and safety training techniques.
    • Willing to travel to Molenaar sites if required

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Safety Management:

    • Monitor and enforce compliance with all safety regulations, policies, and procedures in HG Molenaar.
    • Conduct daily safety inspections of the premises to identify hazards and risks.
    • Develop, implement, and monitor safety programs to ensure a safe working environment.
    • Investigate accidents, near misses, and unsafe working conditions, compiling reports and suggesting corrective actions.
    • Ensure the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) by all employees.
    • Keep a healthy balance between HSE procedures and workforce hours.
    • Monitor and enforce HSE compliance of Contractors to HG Molenaar site.
    • Liaise with Client’s HSE teams, to ensure HGM compliance on external sites.

Regulatory Compliance:

    • Stay updated on South African Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) and other relevant regulations.
    • Ensure compliance with ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety) and other industry safety standards.
    • Coordinate with regulatory bodies to schedule and prepare for safety audits and inspections.

Training and Awareness:

    • Conduct safety training for new and existing employees.
    • Organize regular safety drills, workshops, and refresher courses on emergency procedures and safety practices.
    • Develop and deliver safety communication materials, such as posters, bulletins, and presentations.

Reporting and Documentation:

    • Prepare and maintain detailed records of safety inspections, incident investigations, and safety training sessions.
    • Prepare reports on safety metrics and key performance indicators (KPIs) for management review.
    • Maintain proper documentation for all health and safety activities, including certifications and compliance reports.
    • Compile and maintain proper documentation for external site work.

Risk Assessment:

    • Conduct regular risk assessments of the factory, identifying potential hazards and recommending control measures.
    • Participate in risk assessments for new equipment, machinery, and materials to ensure safety in the workplace.
    • Monitor and assess the effectiveness of corrective actions implemented after safety incidents or assessments.

Emergency Response:

    • Develop and maintain emergency procedures, including evacuation plans and first-aid protocols.
    • Lead or assist in emergency response efforts during accidents, fires, or other urgent situations.
    • Ensure that emergency equipment such as fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and emergency exits are always accessible and in good condition.

Health & Environmental Compliance:

    • Ensure that the factory complies with environmental health and safety standards.
    • Monitor environmental impact by ensuring safe disposal of hazardous materials, adherence to waste management protocols, and the reduction of pollution.
