Job Description

Corporate Senior Lawyer– Johannesburg

Brief

Owing to a substantial pipeline of work and potential opportunities, we are looking to expand our transactional services team in Johannesburg by recruiting a corporate senior lawyer with 7+ years PQE. While this role will be based in Johannesburg, the successful candidate will be working with South African and international colleagues on corporate transactions across the continent.

We are looking for a technically excellent corporate lawyer with experience in corporate finance, M&A (domestic and cross-border) and private equity (beneficial, but not essential). The ideal candidate will have trained at a large South African or international firm and will have had exposure to top-tier corporate/M&A work. Experience in cross-border work would be beneficial but is not essential.

In addition to having excellent technical skills, candidates will be commercially aware, with a strong knowledge of corporate activity and trends in the South African and regional markets. Pinsent Masons is a collegiate, barrier-free work environment and candidates should be able to demonstrate a strong history of teamwork and a client-focussed approach. Candidates will also have excellent communication and project management skills.

Our Corporate Group

Our team of corporate lawyers are currently working with sophisticated multinational clients on a variety of corporate/M&A transactions (including acquisitions, disposals, joint ventures etc.) in line with our clear sector-focused approach to the market. A number of our clients are market-leaders in energy and infrastructure development across the continent.

By aligning with clients' business strategies and bringing together an on-the-ground team of African specialists in corporate/M&A, as well as our wider teams across our global office network with specific interest and experience in advising on African transactions, we are able to support and advise clients in relation to complex domestic and cross-border corporate transactions. In addition to having a highly-rated team with extensive experience of advising on high-profile M&A deals across the continent operating out of our Johannesburg office, we are able to call upon immediate input from leading corporate and subject matter specialists in our global offices. This allows us to provide advice and service of an international standard efficiently and with the benefit of understanding the inevitable nuances and complexities of local markets in which our clients operate better than most. It is because of this that clients trust us with their most strategically important matters across the continent.

The successful candidate will be:

  • a team player who wants significant responsibility and to take ownership of matters with strong support from senior and junior team members;
  • interested in developing strong working relationships with colleagues and willing to contribute to the development of junior team members;
  • be technically excellent and want to be a subject matter expert;
  • exercise common sense and good commercial judgement;
  • be innovative and receptive to different ways of working in a fresh and fast-paced environment, including a willingness to contribute to various aspects of the team's practice and client relationships;
  • have strong inter-personal skills and be comfortable with client-facing responsibilities; and
  • have an interest in being part of an international practice with a global outlook that does things differently.
