We are looking for a skilled and driven Team Lead: Road Transport to oversee the end-to-end coordination of coal haulage from third-party mines to port. In this role, you will lead a team of transport coordinators, manage transporter performance, ensure compliance with SLAs, and tackle logistics challenges with precision and agility.
Key responsibilities:- Monitor and evaluate transporter performance using KPIs (on-time delivery, safety, load integrity, etc.)
- Coordinate daily and weekly truck scheduling in line with coal offtake plans
- Lead and manage a team of transport coordinators handling local and long-haul operations
- Ensure adequate shift staffing and scheduling to meet operational demands
- Align daily road transport needs with coal availability at mines and port export schedules
- Optimize turnaround times and route planning to minimize delays and demurrage
- Collaborate with mine and port personnel to ensure smooth load dispatch and delivery
- Oversee and manage relationships with third-party transporters under SLA agreements
- Ensure adherence to company HSE standards, transport legislation, and contractual terms
- Address transporter non-compliance, applying corrective actions or penalties as required
- Maintain comprehensive records of transporter activities, incidents, and performance
- Produce operational reports on tonnages, incidents, performance, and cost trends
- Analyze data to identify logistics risks, trends, and opportunities for process improvement
- Liaise with internal teams to ensure seamless coordination
- Serve as the main point of contact between the business and external road transport contractors
- Bachelor’s degree in Logistics, Transport Management, Supply Chain, or related field
- 3–5 years of experience in road transport or logistics, ideally within mining or bulk commodities
- Strong knowledge of coal logistics operations in South Africa
- Experience managing SLAs and third-party transporter relationships
- Proficient in logistics software, vehicle tracking, and route optimization tools
- Familiarity with transport legislation and safety compliance requirements
- Strong leadership, coordination, and problem-solving abilities
- Strong attention to detail and the ability to remain calm under pressure
- High level of initiative, accountability, and organizational skills
