Kumba Iron Ore

We produce high-grade iron ore, the key component in steel widely used in construction and manufacturing across the world. Our activities include all aspects – exploration; mining; processing and blending; shipping; marketing and selling. In South Africa, we have mining operations in the Northern Cape province, as well as a head office in Gauteng, and a port operation in Saldanha Bay, Western Cape.

Job Description

As MIOC Coordinator you will provide services as required and your responsibilities will include but not limited to:

Safety, Health, and Environment

  • Maintain a secure and safe work environment where employees can deliver their outputs in a controlled environment free from harm.
  • Keep environmental impact within statutory requirements to ensure compliance with our operating license.
  • Manage and oversee fatigue management on shifts.
  • Lead as the most senior person on shift and oversee mining operations through Dispatch as needed.
  • Escalate any operational and SHE-related matters to the responsible Section Managers or Mining(s) manager promptly.
  • Active participation in VFLs, Risk Assessments and close-out of Safety Actions (when applicable).

Performance and Delivery

  • Deliver a Business Execution Plan through shift-based operational performance and short-interval control.
  • Manage and direct operations to achieve the budget plan and schedule compliance metrics.
  • Utilise mining equipment according to the target to ensure the achievement of Operational Equipment Effectiveness (“OEMs”).
  • Execute planned work and reduce the amount of ad hoc/urgent work.
  • Load Trucks to total capacity when hauling, ensuring drilling remains on schedule and Loading is aware if targets are not met.
  • Maintain Scheduled work, Scheduled Completion and Schedule Effectiveness as per target.
  • Support Feedback and Measures (A&I) process utilisation in the team.
  • Revise on-shift management of Mining Standards, covering the total value chain (block prep to dumps).
  • Ensure safe operations through proper dust management, fatigue management and all other PUE-related controls.
  • Conduct critical control monitoring on shifts as well as high-risk work verification.
  • Serve as the link between Dispatch systems and Operational Shift Coordinators /Supervisors regarding management and supervision of block preparation, drill and blast and equipment utilisation.
  • First point of contact in analysing fatigue incidents and non-adherence to follow protocol in allocating trucks and shovels.
  • Report substandard road conditions to the section responsible for keeping damage to equipment to a minimum.
  • Ensure continuous integration with the plant (plant feed).
  • Feedback and handover at both the start and end of the shift.
  • Attend Planning meetings to ensure complete alignment with mine deployment.

Sustainability and Social

  • Protects Anglo American’s license to operate and reputation by embedding sustainable practices in day-today mining operations.
  • Proactively manages the impact of mining on the environment and community and drives compliance with licensing and legal requirements.
  • Adopts a holistic view of the mining environment.
  • Understands and manages the combined impact of operations such as transport, noise, and vibrations.
  • Embeds sustainable practice into all activities.

People and Teams

  • Optimise human resources to maximise output and ensure the total value chain delivers on its commitment (budget).
  • Coach and support supervisors as part of their development process/needs.
  • Encourage and support the best operator in the seat (“BOIS”) principles.
  • Ensure that work ethics are of such a nature that workers continuously strive towards improving their performance.
  • Ensure alignment across shifts, securing the life of Kolomela and leaving a legacy.
  • Promote a culture of inclusivity, diversity, and productivity.
  • Stand up and speak up against non-compliance with company values and behaviours.
  • Participate in succession planning/talent management.

Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with all legal, environmental, occupational health, safety, and risk management standards and best practices and take remedial action where necessary.
  • Promote the best practice guidelines to enhance our operations’ efficiencies (P101).
  • Compliance with all audit and other license-to-operate requirements.
  • Ensure 24/7/365 supervision coverage as per DMRE requirements.

This role is in the Mining (MIN) at a Band 6 level reporting to the Section Manager.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 / N3 Technical
  • National Diploma in Mining /Mining Engineering (NQF6)
  • B.Eng., / B.Sc. in Mining Engineering (Advantageous)
  • The Open Cast Blasting Certificate (DMRE approved) (Advantageous)
  • FLM/MMP Certificate
  • A2/A3 ORMP Training Certificate
  • Legal Liability Training Certificate
  • Mine Overseers Ticket (Advantageous)
  • Mine Managers Certificate of Competency (Advantageous)
  • SA Drivers Licence Code B

Experience

  • 3-5 years of relevant experience in a mining environment.
  • Proficiency in MS Office Suite, Dispatch system (Modular), SORD, SAP.
  • Knowledge of the mining value chain, cost-saving initiatives, and varied mining methods.
  • Expertise in block preparation, plant feed, and the mining value chain.
  • TMM and optimal equipment set-up and cost-benefit of block preparation machinery.
  • MHSA knowledge of environmental, occupational health, and risk management standards.
  • Emerging and innovative technological advancements.
