The individual in the role is responsible for ensuring high-quality audio mixing for live broadcasts, on-location recordings, and other productions. This includes operating and maintaining mixing consoles, managing audio sources, and working closely with editorial and technical teams to deliver audio output that meets professional broadcast standards.
Live Broadcast Audio Mixing
Set up and manage fader strips, hybrids test unit, gain structures, and auxiliary channels on the mixing console.
Lineup sync test with JHB/CPT engineer (colour bars tone, clapper board test, lip sync and test signal generator)
Collaborate and/or substitute Audio Assistant’s function as required.
Operate the audio console during live and pre-recorded news bulletins.
Balance levels between microphones, music beds, effects, and external sources.
Follow TD’s instructions and correspond audio with vision mixer cues.
Follow auto cue/teleprompter.
Mix audio to required standards, meeting the international standards 0db where possible.
Monitor program output levels continuously to avoid distortion or dead air.
Ensure 100% audio readiness before going on-air.
On-Location/Outside Broadcasts (OB)
Record synchronized sound using field mixers.
Conduct full gear checks before every shoot, including transmitters, receivers, batteries, and cabling.
Set up and label microphones, pair frequencies, and verify channel routing.
Collaborate with camera operators for sync tests.
Mic up talent, set EQ levels, and monitor battery life.
Ensure the correct aux channels are opened for hybrids/Telos units.
Set up and test remote feeds and comms systems.
Conduct lip sync and clapperboard tests with engineers in other locations (e.g., JHB/CPT).
Monitor and adjust the mix live during OBs, ensuring clarity and consistency.
Audio Signal Management
Monitor all active audio channels and hybrid feeds.
Adjust package and hybrid levels dynamically based on editorial changes.
Set up EQs for on-air talent.
Use aux pre-fade to test hybrid lines before airing guests.
Ensure all changes reflect the vision of the director and editorial team.
Equipment Management and Technical Maintenance
Maintain all studio and field audio equipment in working order.
Report faults immediately to the Head of Audio.
Ensure backups and spare batteries are always on hand.
Log all technical issues accurately for resolution and reporting.
Compliance and Safety
Maintain audio equipment and report faults or servicing needs.
Ensure compliance with broadcast regulatory standards and copyright laws.

Participate in periodic compliance training as required.
Stakeholder Relationships and Reporting
Collaborate with Technical Directors and Executive Producers to meet production requirements.
Engage actively in discussions, ensuring collaboration across multiple teams.
Build strong relationships, develop sources, and collaborate with media teams.
Write detailed reports on technical issues to the management team as required.
Qualifications
National Senior Certificate - Essential
National Diploma in Audio - Essential
Experience
3 years in Audio and/or Broadcast
Drivers Licences - Essential
