Taste & Wellbeing Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) Manager for South Africa

An EHS Manager with a global leader in the creation of Taste & Wellbeing and Fragrance & Beauty, and an integral part of our Taste & Wellbeing South Africa Plant Operations team, and based in Johannesburg - Your future position?
Our South Africa plant operations site in Tulisa (Johannesburg) was established in 1956 and is one of our flagship manufacturing sites in the region, focusing on Beverages, Snacks, Dairy, and other unique ingredients for the Taste & Wellbeing sector. The site employs approximately 90 people
We are now hiring an ‘Environment, Health, and Safety (EHS) Manager’ for the site. The role will be based at our Tulisa site and will report to the Taste & Wellbeing Plant Operations Director for South Africa. You will directly manage an EHS Specialist and a Learner
You will direct and support the management of all Environmental, Health and Safety functions for the site in compliance with Givaudan EHS processes and with all applicable EHS regulations. You will manage risk and drive cultural change to reduce the probability of EHS incidents and improve the EHS organisation to deliver added value to the organisation. You will also promote the EHS culture across the organisation

In this exciting role, you will be responsible for -
Partner and support the Operations strategy and business planning:
  • Support and advise site management on all EHS aspects.
  • Develop an EHS vision for the site that aligns with Givaudan’s strategy and purpose, taking into account both the Operations & EHS Global Strategy and programs, as well as local legislation.
  • Maintain strong relationships with key external partners, including authorities, communities, and relevant networks.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for federal, state, and local EHS regulatory agencies.

Regulatory knowledge:
  • Understanding of regulations: Bring your knowledge and familiarity with local, national, and international EHS regulations and standards (OSHA, EPA, etc.).
  • Compliance management: Ensure that the Tulisa site adheres to all relevant laws and regulations.
  • Major Hazardous Installation (MHI) plant risks: Understand MHI plant risks and all relevant laws and regulations, as outlined in the OSHA Act and Regulations, as a minimum.

Risk assessment and management:
  • Hazard identification: Identify potential hazards in the workplace.
  • Risk analysis: Proficiently conduct risk assessments and implement control measures to mitigate risks.

Incident investigation:
  • Root cause analysis: Thoroughly investigate incidents and accidents to determine their root causes.
  • Reporting: Document findings and recommend corrective actions.
  • Human and Organisational Performance (HOP): Apply HOP Principles to incident investigation and root cause identification.

Training and communication:
  • Training development: Develop and deliver EHS training programs for employees.
  • Effective communication: Clearly convey EHS policies and procedures to ensure a thorough understanding.
  • Act as a coach to line managers to ensure that EHS becomes and remains a line responsibility.

Data analysis and reporting:
  • Data Management: Collect and analyse EHS data to track performance and identify trends.
  • Reporting: Prepare reports for management and regulatory bodies to ensure compliance and transparency.
  • Safety leading indicators: Understand, set up, develop, and interpret safety leading indicators.

Project management:
  • Planning and implementation: Plan and execute EHS projects and initiatives.
  • Budget management: Understand budgeting processes related to EHS programs.

Leverage your interpersonal skills:
  • Team Collaboration: Work collaboratively with various departments and stakeholders.
  • Leadership: Lead EHS initiatives and influence a culture of safety across the organisation.
  • Employ influential leadership: Influence the right behaviours for a strong safety culture.

Bring your Sustainability passion and knowledge:
  • Environmental Management: Understand sustainability practices and how they integrate with EHS management.
  • Continuous improvement: Commit to improving environmental performance and promoting sustainable practices across the organisation.

Team leadership:

  • Manage and enrich the talent pool, including performance management, individual development, mentoring, succession planning, career mapping, and gap analysis.

Your professional profile includes:
  • University degree in Food, Chemistry, Science, Engineering, EHS, or other relevant disciplines.
  • 5+ years of relevant and progressive work experience in EHS in a production or manufacturing environment(s), ideally in a multinational work environment. Preference for candidates with experience in the Flavour, FMCG, Food, Beverage, Ingredients, Chemical, or Mining sectors.
  • 3+ years track record of successfully leading and driving impactful EHS change programmes and initiatives.
  • Hold valid EHS qualifications and certifications – NOSA, NEBOSH, etc.
  • Familiar with Major Hazard Installation (MHI), Risk Prevention, and Business Continuity Plans.
  • Experience in leading small teams would be good to have.
  • Demonstrate a strong appreciation and commitment to high quality and safety standards.
  • A team player and comfortable with diversity.
  • Preference will be given to suitable candidates from designated groups whose appointments will contribute towards achieving the Company's employment equity goals.
