Kumba Iron Ore

We produce high-grade iron ore, the key component in steel widely used in construction and manufacturing across the world. Our activities include all aspects – exploration; mining; processing and blending; shipping; marketing and selling. In South Africa, we have mining operations in the Northern Cape province, as well as a head office in Gauteng, and a port operation in Saldanha Bay, Western Cape.


Job Description
-As a Continuous Improvement Specialist, you will provide services as required and your responsibilities will include but not limited to:

Safety, Health, and Environment

  • Consistently apply Safety and Health principles in all team interactions and take personal responsibility for the safety of self and others to ensure zero harm and elimination of fatalities.
  • Lead safety initiatives (e.g. VFLs) as required.
  • Act as a role model and reinforce a workplace culture where safety and health for the sites are paramount.
  • Provide an environment for on-site teams to challenge and act on unsafe behaviours without repercussions.
  • Collect and summarise specific risks within the working area and implement plans/systems to mitigate these.

Performance and Delivery

  • Continuous Improvement
  • Lead the identification, prioritisation, and implementation of improvement projects based on sound continuous improvement, including operating model Feedback and A&I principles.
  • Conduct Level 2-3 metric and root cause analysis required to support operational managers in making critical decisions about potential business benefits and trade-offs for various interdependent initiatives.
  • Assist with coaching line management in key continuous improvement concepts, including operating model feedback and A&I principles.
  • Assist with developing training material customised for local circumstances, yet utilising concepts and material consistent with the operating model, Feedback and A&I principles.
  • Provide continuous improvement advice and support to the line to deliver practical improvement projects,

including:

  • Identifying appropriate areas of improvement through data analysis.
  • Assist with setting up improvement projects.
  • Identification of key stakeholders and resources.
  • Setting up objectives and tracking KPIs.
  • Assistance and guidance with data collection, analysis, interpretation, reporting and review.
  • Identification of potential actions in response to the outcome of the analysis.
  • Coaching on the operating model, Feedback, and A&I principles.
  • Support the Set Production and Set Service Strategy processes in terms of data analysis, trends, interpretation of data, and reporting on findings.
  • Participate in audits and AAOM Reviews

Outputs:

  • Clear understanding of operating model, Feedback, and A&I concepts.
  • Line managers receive quality continuous improvement advice and support to make business-critical decisions and successfully implement improvement projects/initiatives.
  • Routine data analysis, interpretation, and guidance for agreed production areas.
  • Specific data analysis, interpretation, and reports for ad-hoc requests.
  • Overall system and process optimisation.
  • Facilitation of discrete improvement projects, start to finish, including change management and sustainability.
  • PIT mentoring and coaching

People and Teams

  • Support developing and implementing a purpose-led, high-performing culture within the team that is aligned with the company values, inclusivity, and diversity.
  • Implement management processes for employee and contractor management within the work area.
  • Contribute to the development of team members by:
    • Develop plans to address team improvement, knowledge, and skill gaps through coaching.
    • Communicate performance requirements to teams and provide visibility of employee achievements

This role is in the Plant at a Band 6 level reporting to the Sishen Plant & Services: Engineering Manager.

Sishen: Manager, Engineering & Maintenance Plant.


Qualifications
  • -B. Tech or B-degree (e.g. Mining, Processing, Geoscience, Industrial Engineering, etc.) or equivalent on NQF7
  • SA Drivers Licence

Advantageous

  • Postgraduate qualification in Business or Engineering Management (NQF8)
  • Lean, 6 Sigma.
  • Project Management
  • Power BI or Tableau competency
  • MBA or Masters degree in Engineering or Data sciences

Technical Knowledge

  • 6-8 years of relevant experience in continuous improvement, preferably in the mining industry.
  • Advanced knowledge of the Anglo American Operating model (esp. Feedback process).
  • Advanced knowledge of mining (preferably open-pit), processing, or engineering industry.
  • Advanced knowledge of key value drivers across the mining value chain and the interdependence therein.
  • Advanced Computer Literacy (MS Office, Projects, Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Knowledge of Mathematical and Statistical skills to help gather, measure, organise, and analyse data.
  • Knowledge of the mining industry and relevant legislation, including the Mine Health and Safety Act.
  • Knowledge of basic financial metrics, cost, value management, and budgeting tools.
  • Experience in identifying and implementing business improvement opportunities and projects at mines.
  • Experience in applying Project Management fundamentals.
  • Experience in strategy implementation and business planning.
  • Good knowledge of change management methodologies.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
