The Opportunity

Our UKIMEA region is seeking a Senior HSEQ Business Partner for our South Africa offices. The role holder will be responsible for leading, establishing, implementing; coordinating and championing all activities related to the implementation of the Health, Safety, Wellbeing and Quality Management Systems across our Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg offices; and project locations. This role delivers at senior operational level with the opportunity to help shape and influence our practices and positive outcomes. This is a business/project facing role requiring well developed skills in communication, influencing and collaboration. Daily liaison with project managers, project directors and leaders will be required. The incumbent will work with the wider regional and global integrated HSEQ teams. The role will include general HSEQ responsibilities such as training, reporting and auditing activities, drives continuous improvement and promoting a positive safety culture for all – at office, client and site level.

Health, Safety and Wellbeing

  • Promote a culture of care where safety is everyone’s responsibility and integrated within everything we do, advise and coach leadership on role modelling health, safety and wellbeing.
  • Enable Arup’s project teams to establish appropriate health and safety arrangements for projects, including health and safety plans, procedures and systems.
  • Provide technical H&S input into new bid opportunities, enabling project teams to identify and establish appropriate H&S resourcing.
  • Champion design safety, partnering with project teams to integrate the design safety framework and key concepts within their designs.
  • Provide design health and safety advice and risk management services to ensure compliance with duties imposed by relevant legislation. This will include supporting Arup with the selection, appointment and training of Principal Designer and Design Safety Advisors on projects.
  • Ensure you provide consistent professional safety advice for bids and on projects.
  • Prepare, implement, and review H&S processes and deliverables including PCIP, Design Management Plan, H&S Files, Designers risk register, project method statements, risk and assessment and H&S frameworks are prepared to ensure safe systems of work are established and communicated.
  • Lead the investigation of serious incidents and near misses, identifying root causes and appropriate corrective actions that focus on identifying and addressing learning outcomes to prevent re-occurrence.

Quality Management

  • Deliver work of quality, using our quality management systems and the programme of quality checking and inspection of work.
  • Support the programme of internal audits, checking and inspections are completed to plan across geography/region, lead where necessary on large, complex or high-risk audits.
  • Consolidate audit (internal & external) findings across geography/region to present consistent approach. Ensure actions are effectively tracked and managed to completion. Present insights to leadership and lead discussion on mitigating solutions.
  • Establish and implement assurance programmes for projects, including conducting H&S audits and inspections to ensure safe working practices are followed, and ensuring corrective actions are closed out. This will include the completion of (safe by design) audits to ensure compliance.
  • Establish effective governance processes to manage the H&S risks arising from the appointment of sub-contractors/consultants when used to discharge H&S roles.

Is this role right for you?

We are looking for the following knowledge, experience and competence:

Recognizable senior level experience in the professional services or built environment industry
  • - working in a Quality, H&S and Environmental role (at a senior level as described.)
  • Professionally qualified in at least one discipline Quality, H&S or Environmental Management.
  • Lead auditor qualifications in at least one of the ISO standards: ISO 9001, ISO 45001 or ISO 14001
  • NEBOSH International General Certificate
  • A positive and collaborative approach
  • Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills
  • A methodical approach but with ability to flex
  • Management skills with a hands-on approach
  • Attention to detail without losing sight of the end goal
  • Ability to work under pressure and to deadlines
  • Influencing skills at all staff levels
  • Able to travel
  • Developing own knowledge of all disciplines of HSEQ
  • A passion for driving HSEQ forwards

The below credentials will be preferable:

  • IEMA or equivalent environmental qualification
  • Professional chartership/registration in either Quality, H&S or Environmental
