Kumba Iron Ore

We produce high-grade iron ore, the key component in steel widely used in construction and manufacturing across the world. Our activities include all aspects – exploration; mining; processing and blending; shipping; marketing and selling. In South Africa, we have mining operations in the Northern Cape province, as well as a head office in Gauteng, and a port operation in Saldanha Bay, Western Cape.

Job Description

As Manager Mining you will provide services as required and your responsibilities will include but not limited to:

Safety, Health, and Environment

  • Ensure consistent use of Safety & Health principles in own discipline.
    • Take personal responsibility for self and others' safety to prevent harm and fatalities.
    • Promote a safe and healthy workplace culture by setting an example - Encourage on-site discipline to address harmful behaviour without consequences.
    • Consider safety and health consequences for neighbouring communities while making decisions within the discipline.
  • Create discipline-specific plans/systems to mitigate hazards.
    • Develop and approve operational risk management systems to assess risks and monitor controls –
    • Identify and monitor PUEs within the discipline.
    • Ensure teams integrate critical controls into daily work practices.
  • Ensure that the Safety & Health systems for the department are operational.
    • Evaluate the safety leadership skills of direct reports and the potential of the wider team.
    • Ensure all discipline teams meet safety requirements according to the Operating Model workflow.
    • Conduct physical safety checks, interventions, and coaching.
    • Set up KPIs, look at data on discipline safety, and address gaps in their teams.

Performance and Delivery

Strategy Alignment:

  • Implement mining engineering strategies aligned with business strategy to meet objectives.
  • Identify strategies for mining operations and optimise processes, managing external factors and utilising technology to support future operations.

Geotechnical and Rock Engineering:

  • Assess the geological and geotechnical landscape to solve technical and operational issues and enable safe and effective mine layout design, planning, and engineering.
  • Assess compliance with relevant group technical standards and relevant legislation.
  • Analyse technical and operational issues in cooperation with relevant stakeholders
  • Refine and implement adequate rock mass controls and risk monitoring, including risk-based designs.
  • Mining Operations
  • Assess the efficiency and effectiveness of mining outcomes to ensure compliance with the plan.
  • Identify new technologies in varied mining operations (e.g. commodity and cross-mining processes and methods) and associated ways of working to drive increased value for Anglo American
  • Refine best practice standards for mining operations, controls, and performance reporting.
  • Ensures group-wide alignment.

Equipment Management:

  • Drives equipment utilisation, maintenance, and enhancement to achieve maximum value, safety, and competitive advantage.
  • Works in partnership with suppliers to develop and purchase new equipment to ensure Anglo American can respond to future challenges and priorities.
  • Identify equipment/asset management and optimisation improvements and innovation, incorporating the latest technology and techniques.

Mining Technical/Mine Planning:

  • Identify and provide input to optimise mining plans that incorporate mining, geological, ventilation (when applicable), geotechnical, metallurgical, and economic information.
  • Scrutinises and tests the mine plan, ensuring a balance of cost and safety requirements to achieve business goals.

Process Optimisation:

  • Optimise the mining lifecycle, value chain and impact of mining activities on business and operational performance.
  • Optimises mining processes and operations through effective financial, labour and project management.
  • Analyses vital performance data and applies insights to remove barriers and deliver high performance.

Sustainability and Social:

  • Lead technical support for Life of Asset Plan sustainability initiatives, integrate Sustainable Mining Plan commitments, manage environmental and social risks, ensure compliance with SHE and Social Way criteria, foster local partnerships, and participate in site-level interaction forums for the discipline.

Advisory Services:

  • Provide operational excellence support and technical advice to project teams, establish a mining engineering and survey centre of excellence, offer to consult to projects and operations, and manage the mining technology program.

People and Teams:

  • Leadership and Culture: Promote an inclusive, purpose-driven culture, actively participating in team procedures and implementing effective team processes to encourage continuous improvement and alignment with company values.
  • Talent Development: Oversee discipline-wide talent development and address gaps through coaching and implementing succession planning to focus on critical roles.
  • Dispute Resolution: Engage in local dispute resolution with employee representative bodies as relevant to the discipline and escalate when required.

Compliance:

  • Compliance Governance Oversight: Establish and manage comprehensive compliance governance and ensure actions for compliance within the discipline.
  • Incident Investigation and Learning Implementation: Lead comprehensive investigations for safety, health, environment, and social incidents within the discipline, adhering to appropriate processes to ensure the implementation of learnings.
  • Knowledge Sharing and Communication: Ensure the sharing of learnings within the discipline through appropriate channels.

This role is in the Mining (MIN) at a Band 5 level reporting to the General Manager Kolomela.

Qualifications

  • Grade 12
  • Degree in Mining Engineering
  • Mine Manager Certificate of Competency (MMCC)
  • Post-graduate degree in Mining Engineering NQF8
  • Master’s Degree in Business Administration (MBA) (Preferred)
  • SA Drivers License

Experience

  • Extensive understanding of maintenance and engineering operations in a mining environment, with a minimum of 8-10 years of experience, including at least 3 years in a managerial role.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of managing a sizeable sub-functional team within a mining or operational environment.
  • Insight into key drivers and interdependencies across the site value chain and their impact on business performance.
  • In-depth understanding of the principles and elements of the Operating Model for Work Management and their application in the field.
  • Knowledge of project management fundamentals and their application in a mining context.
  • Awareness of new technologies and their potential impact on operational activities and processes.
  • Familiarity with business improvement strategies and techniques for enhancing operational efficiency.
  • Expertise in mining operations, including knowledge of relevant commodities and sub-disciplines.
  • Understanding of safety-by-design principles and Operational Risk Management (ORM) methods.
  • Proficiency in data measurement, monitoring, and analysis methods to drive operational improvements.
  • Strong grasp of commercial and business drivers within the discipline and their influence on overall business performance, strong commercial acumen to drive cost saving initiatives in the mining department.
  • Understanding basic financial metrics, cost management, value management, and budgeting tools.
  • Knowledge of risk management techniques and critical controls applicable in a mining environment.
  • Awareness of value chain management within the discipline and interdependencies across different value chain steps.
  • Understanding leadership tools and principles for fostering a purpose-led, high-performance culture and managing change.
  • Familiarity with Anglo American Organisation Model concepts and principles.
  • Strategic thinking capability to develop and implement asset strategies aligned with business goals.
