Our activities include all aspects – exploration; mining; processing and blending; shipping; marketing and selling. In South Africa, we have mining operations in the Northern Cape province, as well as a head office in Gauteng, and a port operation in Saldanha Bay, Western Cape.

Job Description
As our Specialist Occupational Hygiene, your responsibilities will include but not limited to:
- Create and maintain a safe and healthy work environment for employees and service providers.
- Ensure that the environmental impact of occupational hygiene and emergency preparedness and response meets statutory requirements for legal compliance.
- Design, coordinate, and manage comprehensive hygiene programmes based on evaluation findings.
- Provide adequate support and information to minimise health risks for employees.
- Ensure that workplace assessments are conducted and that statutory and other reports are submitted as required by regulatory authorities and management.
- Support the implementation of Occupational Hygiene systems at all Kumba operations.
- Regularly review policies, procedures, guidelines, and codes of practice to ensure they meet operational needs.
- Ensure the work environment complies with all relevant hygiene standards to minimise potential health risks to employees
- Implement the hierarchy of controls to minimise health risks to employees.
- Optimise resources in a way that ensures maximum output from the section.
- Establish and maintain a holistic professional OHS service which creates and facilitates a healthy and safe working environment.
- Develop and manage the implementation of OHS policies, procedures, processes and structures to ensure compliance with the relevant statutory and professional requirements.
- Monitor and report on occupational health risk indicators and associated trends.
- Evaluate, audit and review risk control programmes.
- Manage occupational hygiene projects and initiatives.
- Actively participate in incident investigations and ensure corrective actions are implemented.
- Produce Occupational exposure histories and link Occupational Hygiene measurements to medical surveillance records via the system mandated by the mine operations.
- Monitor the operations' emergency preparedness and response status to support business continuity.
- Advise the mine on the mine emergency preparedness and response requirements as mandated by relevant legislation.
- Compile Emergency Related COP to foster compliance with the DMR requirements.
- Tests the Emergency preparedness and response of the operation through emergency drills and reports accordingly.
- Develop fire prevention and management strategies by enforcing compliance with the Prevention of Fires in Mines COP.
- Coordinate and participate in Fire Risk Assessments and audits.
- Manage financial expenditure within the approved budget to ensure maximum benefit.
- Compile the budget by KIO standards and practices.
- Implement continuous improvement initiatives to reduce expenses.
- Ensure expenditure is done within the budget.
- Conduct financial forecasting as per the set schedule.
- Provide over-cost expenditure information required by finance on time and justify as required.
- Inform subordinates of the expenditures of the section.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Occupational Hygiene/ Environmental Science on NQF7
- Advanced Certificate in Mine and Environmental Control (ACMEC).
- Registration with the Mine Ventilation Society (MVS) or the SA Institute of Occupational Hygiene (SAIOH) as an Occupational Hygienist.
- Intermediate Certificate in Mine and Environmental Control (MEC).
- Mine Ventilation Society (MVS) registration.
- SA Drivers Licence
- 6-8 years of experience in occupational hygiene in the mining industry.
- Knowledge of environmental risk assessment, resource management, and opportunity identification within an operational context.
- Understanding safety risk management principles and practices in compliance with regulatory standards.
- Knowledge of health risk management frameworks and wellness promotion strategies in the workplace.
- Understanding integrated risk management systems, including identifying, analysing, and mitigating risks across business functions.
- Familiarity with project management methodologies and SHE (Safety, Health, Environment) business process modelling.
- Knowledge of performance reporting frameworks, including data collection, analysis, and interpretation for business improvement.
- Comprehensive mining and process operations understanding, including key processes, equipment, and environmental considerations.
- Knowledge of sustainability principles and practices in creating long-term, environmentally and socially responsible business models.
