Underwriter

Role Purpose

Evaluate, review and analyse insurance applications and screen applicants against set criteria in order to determine client risk and provide recommendations on approval or rejection of applications.

Requirements

• Grade 12 or equivalent qualification
• B-Degree in Business, Finance, or related field
• Relevant medical qualification (nursing, physiotherapy, or equivalent)
• 2-3 years underwriting experience (essential)
• Experience in finacial services (desired)

Duties and Responsibilities

• Make accurate individual underwriting decisions for new applicants and additional dependants applying to join Momentum Medical Sheme by applying:
• The Medical Schemes Act (legislation)
• The Momentum Medical Schme underwriting policy
• Standards, protocols and guidelines set
• Assist the underwriting team by providing clinical input on medical information provided by applicants in order to make accurate individual underwriting decisions.
• Create new and maintain existing standards and clinical protocols and guidelines.
• Provide training (clinical) internally to assist with application of guidelines.
• Create new and maintain existing list of condition specific exclusions and associated link to required clinical coding
• Assist brokers, applicants, and members where applicable with regards to underwriting decisions made either telephonically, in writing or in person as required.
• Liaise with doctors and/or medical professionals where applicable with regards to underwriting decisions made either telephonically, in writing or in person as required.
• Effectively resolve any queries received and identifying trends and training gaps.
• Drive and support effective departmental team work.
