An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Full-Time Live-In gardener & complex assistant at Rozendal Estate.

Position Overview

  • Position Title: Full-Time Live-In Gardener & Complex Assistant
  • Working Hours: Monday to Friday (Standard hours, with general daytime monitoring)
  • Accommodation: Provided (On-site room located by the guardhouse)
  • Reporting To: The Board of Trustees / Property Management

Primary Purpose of the Role

To maintain the estate’s gardens, pool, and general neatness to a high standard, while providing an active, on-site presence during the day. This role combines hands-on physical labour (gardening, pool maintenance, minor repairs) with basic site supervision (contractor oversight, day-to-day estate monitoring) to ensure smooth operations without the need for a non-working caretaker.

Key Responsibilities & Duties

1. Gardening & Ground Maintenance

  • Perform daily hands-on gardening tasks to maintain the estate's aesthetic appeal.
  • Supervise Garden Services: Act as the on-site point of contact when external garden services are present, ensuring they fulfil their scope of work and maintain complex standards.
  • Ensure common property areas are kept neat, tidy, and free of refuse.

2. Pool Maintenance

  • Daily Cleaning: Skim, vacuum, and brush the complex swimming pool daily.
  • Monitor pool water levels and clear out weir/pump baskets regularly.
  • Report any chemical imbalances or equipment faults immediately to the Trustees.

3. Complex Monitoring & Contractor Oversight

  • Daytime Monitoring: Maintain an active, visible presence in the complex during working hours to deter irregular activity and ensure estate rules are respected.
  • Contractor Attendance: Meet, grant access to, and supervise on-site contractors (e.g., plumbers, electricians, gate technicians), ensuring they work safely and clean up after themselves.

4. Basic Maintenance & First-Line Repairs

  • General Handyman Tasks: Attend to minor, day-to-day estate repairs such as replacing blown light bulbs in common areas.
  • Gate Management: In the event of a main gate malfunction or power failure, manually manage or secure the gate as instructed to ensure complex security is not compromised.
  • Conduct regular walk-throughs to identify and report maintenance issues (e.g., leaking pipes, broken walls, or damaged fencing).
  • Painting lines in the parking lot (once a year)
  • Applying varnish to the kids play area (once a year)

Job Requirements & Qualifications

  • Experience: Proven experience in gardening, landscaping, or general estate/property maintenance.
  • Skills:
    • Basic knowledge of pool care and chemical handling.
    • Practical handyman skills (using basic tools, changing light fittings/bulbs).
    • Strong communication skills to interact professionally with residents, trustees, and contractors.
  • Attributes:
    • High level of reliability, honesty, and trustworthiness (subject to background/reference checks).
    • Proactive mindset—ability to spot problems and address them before they escalate.
    • Physically fit and capable of handling outdoor manual labour daily.
