K9 Handler / K9 Team Job Description – Transnet NEC Contract

Position: K9 Handler / K9 Team Member

Reporting To: Sector Manager / Operations Manager

Contract: Transnet NEC Critical Infrastructure Protection

Purpose of the Position

To provide proactive and reactive security services through the deployment of trained K9s to protect Transnet critical infrastructure, prevent cable theft, vandalism, trespassing, and other criminal activities, while supporting operational teams during patrols, searches, and incident responses.

Key Responsibilities

Security Operations

Conduct routine and ad-hoc patrols along rail corridors, substations, depots, and other Transnet assets.

Utilize K9 capabilities to detect, track, and apprehend suspects were legally permitted.

Assist with searching for stolen property, hidden suspects, and evidence.

Support rapid response operations following security incidents.

Maintain a visible security presence to deter criminal activities.

Incident Response

Respond immediately to alarms, reports of cable theft, trespassing, vandalism, and other incidents.

Conduct tracking operations using K9 resources.

Assist law enforcement agencies when required.

Secure crime scenes until handed over to relevant authorities.

Compile incident reports and submit them within prescribed timeframes.

K9 Management

Ensure the health, welfare, and readiness of assigned K9s always.

Conduct daily inspections of K9 equipment and transport vehicles.

Maintain training standards through regular exercises and assessments.

Ensure proper feeding, grooming, and veterinary care of assigned K9s.

Maintain accurate records of K9 deployments and activities.

Operational Support

Work closely with drone teams, reaction officers, control rooms, and management.

Participate in special operations, intelligence-driven deployments, and stabilization projects.

Assist with roadblocks, access control, and high-risk operations when required.

Support investigations by providing information and observations from deployments.

Minimum Requirements

Grade 12 (Matric).

Valid PSIRA registration.

Valid K9 Handler qualification.

Valid driver's license (Code B or higher).

Previous security, military, or law enforcement experience advantageous.

Physically fit and capable of operating in challenging environments.

Ability to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays.

Reduction in cable theft and infrastructure-related incidents.

K9 operational readiness and welfare standards maintained.

Accurate and timely reporting of incidents and activities.

Working Conditions

Outdoor operational environment.

Day and night shifts.

Exposure to remote areas, railway lines, and high-risk crime hotspots.

Participation in emergency and special operations as required by the TRIM NEC Contract.
