Minimum Requirements
- BEng Tech / BTech Degree (or equivalent) in Electrical Power Engineering or a closely related field.
- Base qualification in the field of Electrical Power Engineering (Heavy Current) or equivalent.
- Must possess at least 3 years’ relevant experience.
Recommendations
- BEng Tech Honours in Electrical Power Engineering or closely related qualification (preferred)
- Primary qualifications accredited by a professional body such as the Engineering Council of South Africa.
- Strong interpersonal skills in managing students of diversity and working with a diverse pool of staff.
- A strong passion for technical investigations, troubleshooting, repairs, and creative development in the laboratory.
- Good communication, effective people management skills, and adherence to workplace etiquette.
- Aptitude to learn Engineering application software, improve, and engage in professional development activities.
- Good track record or relevant experience, and a desire to advance technical development in the Department.
- Serve as an invigilator for examinations and tests under the Chief Invigilator.
Summary of duties
- Coordinate and implement the effective operation, administration, and maintenance of designated laboratories in the department of Electrical Power Engineering.
- Support and assist academic staff in regularly assessing students’ performance through practical assessment, assistance, and coordination of Open Laboratory sessions.
- Maintain laboratories to be in a fully functional state and safe working conditions to facilitate disciplined and efficient execution of students’ practicals and projects.
- Must have good communication skills – written/verbal/presentation in English.
- Must be able to work independently and achieve results on time.
- Must be able to plan and schedule work efforts, including management of resources, and manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Report faulty equipment to the Senior technician, also to maintain laboratory equipment, including repair, changing components, e.g., fuses, etc.
- Place orders for new equipment, including the use of the CAPEX departmental budget, and maintain an accurate asset management register for all laboratory equipment as per the university requirements.
- Undertake fault-finding and troubleshooting tasks on departmental hardware facilities and software tools.
- The candidate is required to serve both undergrad and post-graduate students and is actively involved in supporting research activities in the Department.
- Assist with administrative duties such as venue set-up for seminars, lectures, and practicals.
- The candidate must be actively involved in the development of our laboratories, identifying equipment used and carrying out other duties as prescribed by the Head of Department, Academic Staff, and Senior Technician.
