Are you a seasoned leader in mine waste and tailings management, ready to shape the future of sustainable mining across Africa? We are seeking an exceptional Mine Waste Group Manager, Africa to lead our high-performing team and drive strategic growth across the region

Responsibilities

Operational Management

Play an integral part of the development and delivery the business strategy for Mine Waste, Africa in line with the broader Mining Service business.

Responsible for resources are utilised and allocated to project work within the discipline group to meet client service, technical and financial criteria.

Knowledgeable and accountable for the governance and compliance of their business unit, ensuring processes, systems and operations are consistently followed and understood at every level.

Accountable for the financial and operational management of Tailings team in Africa.

Responsible for overseeing Mine Engineering and Stability, Geotechnical services and Advanced Geotech Lab as part of the financial and operational management of the Mine Waste business.

Responsible for day-to-day management of the group including timesheets, expenses, leave, budget expenditure, hiring and terminations.

Responsible for developing group level Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) and continuously influence, lead, communicate and hold people accountable for achievement and delivery of the group and divisions’ business strategy and financial objectives.

Accountable for developing a high performing team including performance feedback, retention and development of our people. Proactively identifying skills and development needs, fostering career development and seeking out and hiring technical and industry leaders to strengthen capability within the business to serve our client needs.

Actively lead by example and ensure all activity is aligned to our policies and procedures and people matters are dealt with consistently, fairly and in a timely manner.

Contribute to building the technical capability of others and transferring technical expertise within the organisation. Foster a culture that generates long-term learning and development of capability.

Business Development & Client Relationship Management

Accountable for developing and maintaining African, global and multi-regional and local client relationships in line with Global Mining and Divisional strategy.

Deliver best client outcomes/options which consider numerous variables, including client costs/time.

Utilise existing network to build client relationships, while maintaining those that are pre-existing.

Develop internal networks with key colleagues.

Project Management and Delivery

Oversees the appropriate management of client projects, obtaining the necessary review and sign off, identifies risks, troubleshoots and reports risks that may cause financial or reputational impact to WSP in Africa .

Accountable for business and project delivery as required to lead the delivery on major Africa Mine Waste projects based on scale and complexity of project.

Develop and implement a resource, recruitment and succession plan for the Africa Mine Waste Team based on the WSP’s business strategy, with support from Talent Acquisition and Human Development teams.

Responsible for the effective sharing/coordination of resources among the Mining Advisory disciplines to optimise productivity, utilisation and workload of the team and allow for skill development and succession planning.

Technical direction of tailings design studies for multi-disciplinary projects locally and internationally.

Review technical deliverables.

Be accountable for efficient project delivery.

Writes winning proposals and contributes to pursuits.

Qualifications

Proven working experience on tailings/mine waste related projects locally or internationally, ideally in a consulting environment

Demonstrated experience of leadership, personal accountability, persistent and goal oriented.

Substantial experience (15 years+) in mine tailings design and management.

Relevant internal and external SHEQ training.

Proven experience within a formal leadership role (10 direct reports or more).

Experienced in dealing with client issues and concerns related to projects and project teams.

Strong experience in business development and ensuring adequate ongoing pipeline.
