The role involves coordinating and facilitating effective communication and collaboration between clients, physicians, hospitals, and various ancillary healthcare providers to ensure seamless service delivery and positive case outcomes. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in ensuring that all medical interactions are handled efficiently, professionally, and in alignment with organizational standards.
Key Responsibilities for the role
The Coordianting Nurse will be responsible for (but not limited to):
- Manage and coordinate medical support services across aviation, maritime, and remote environments, ensuring effective case management and positive patient outcomes.
- Conduct medical assessments via telephone or telemedicine, providing clinical advice and determining fitness to fly, travel, or return to work.
- Coordinate care with clients, physicians, hospitals, and global assistance centres, including arranging referrals, evacuations, and repatriations where required.
- Monitor patient treatment, hospitalisation, and recovery to ensure appropriate care, safe discharge, and readiness to return to duties.
- Escalate complex or high-risk cases in accordance with established protocols and provide clinical guidance to non-medical personnel in remote or offshore settings.
- Support pre-travel medical planning and respond to client queries regarding health risks, treatment options, and travel safety.
- Maintain accurate case documentation and ensure all medical information is handled in strict confidence in line with regulatory requirements.
- Apply cost containment principles while maintaining high standards of care and service delivery.
Occupational Health & Work Health Services
- Deliver occupational health services aligned with industry standards, including injury and illness case management and return-to-work planning.
- Provide medical guidance to on-site personnel and remote stakeholders, ensuring appropriate care for both emergency and non-emergency situations.
- Support workplace injury management, including classification, reporting, and tracking in line with OH&S, OSHA, and relevant client guidelines.
- Assess medical information to determine fitness for duty, including any work restrictions or rehabilitation requirements.
- Coordinate with internal medical teams and assistance centres to ensure continuity of care and effective case oversight.
- Contribute to safe workplace practices by adhering to organisational health and safety policies, participating in training, and promoting a culture of safety.
Qualification and Experience Requirements
Qualifications:
- Nursing diploma / degree – Registered Nurse (RN) essential
- Current registration with South African Nursing Council (SANC)
- Current and Valid ACLS, PALS, ITLS
- Postgraduate qualification in ER or ICU will be advantageous
Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years recent working experience in ICU or ER
- Experience relating to Medical Assistance, Cruise ship, Aviation, Maritime, Travel Medicine, Telephonic Advice/ Telemed is highly advantageous
- Due to the essential nature of the position, this person must be able to work in a shift environment
