Our client, a leading manufacturer within the plastics and packaging sector, is seeking a qualified Electrician to join their maintenance team. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and optimizing electrical systems, production equipment, and plant infrastructure to ensure maximum equipment reliability, operational efficiency, and minimal downtime within a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

This role requires a hands-on artisan with strong fault-finding capabilities, electrical maintenance expertise, and experience working on industrial manufacturing equipment.

Key Responsibilities

Electrical Maintenance & Technical Support

  • Assemble, install, test, maintain, and repair electrical and electronic wiring, equipment, machinery, and plant infrastructure.
  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on production equipment and electrical systems.
  • Conduct fault finding, diagnostics, and repairs on electrical equipment, machinery, and control systems.
  • Identify, report, and rectify electrical defects and technical issues affecting plant operations.
  • Ensure all electrical installations and repairs comply with safety regulations and company standards.
  • Assist with rigging activities and safely perform work at heights when required.

Troubleshooting & Problem Solving

  • Diagnose electrical faults using testing equipment such as voltmeters, ammeters, ohmmeters, oscilloscopes, and related diagnostic tools.
  • Conduct root cause analysis on electrical breakdowns and implement effective corrective actions.
  • Troubleshoot industrial electrical systems including AC/DC circuits, single-phase, two-phase, and three-phase systems.
  • Program and maintain Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs).
  • Escalate complex technical issues to senior maintenance personnel when required.
  • Minimize equipment downtime through efficient and effective fault resolution.

Manufacturing Equipment Support

  • Maintain and support production equipment utilized within plastics manufacturing environments.
  • Assist with maintenance activities relating to material handling, drying systems, moulding equipment, pneumatic systems, hydraulic systems, and associated production machinery.
  • Interpret electrical schematics, engineering drawings, and technical documentation.
  • Ensure machinery and plant infrastructure remain in optimal operating condition.

Spare Parts & Maintenance Planning

  • Identify electrical and electronic spare parts required for equipment maintenance and repairs.
  • Monitor critical spare stock requirements and assist with stock control activities.
  • Support supplier engagement and obtain quotations for electrical components and services when required.
  • Assist with maintenance planning, budgeting, and annual maintenance schedules.
  • Provide recommendations regarding spare part stocking strategies and preventative maintenance requirements.

Administration & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate maintenance records and job logs.
  • Complete maintenance reports and documentation accurately and timeously.
  • Record equipment breakdowns, repairs, and preventative maintenance activities.
  • Assist in tracking maintenance costs and equipment performance.

Health, Safety & Quality

  • Ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety requirements.
  • Maintain housekeeping standards within workshops, stores, technical areas, and production environments.
  • Report safety hazards, incidents, accidents, and near misses.
  • Follow all safe work procedures and ensure correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Support compliance with company quality standards and Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).

Food Safety Compliance

  • Adhere to Food Safety Management System (FSMS) requirements where applicable.
  • Maintain GMP standards within maintenance and production areas.
  • Report any food safety concerns or non-conformances immediately.

Continuous Improvement & Self-Development

  • Keep abreast of technological advancements, electrical innovations, and maintenance best practices.
  • Develop knowledge of plant equipment, production processes, and maintenance systems.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives aimed at improving equipment reliability and operational performance.
  • Demonstrate teamwork, professionalism, accountability, and strong interpersonal skills.

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12 (Matric).
  • Minimum N2 qualification in Electrical Trade Theory.
  • Qualified Trade Tested Electrician.
  • Minimum 5 years' experience in an industrial or manufacturing environment.
  • Strong electrical fault-finding and troubleshooting experience.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings and schematics.
  • Experience working with industrial electrical systems including AC/DC circuits, single-phase and three-phase installations.
  • Experience with Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and industrial control systems.
  • Knowledge of pneumatic and hydraulic systems would be advantageous.
  • Sound understanding of health and safety regulations and safe working procedures.
  • Willingness to work overtime, weekends, and after-hours call-outs when required.
