Anaesthetic Enrolled Nurse

This role focuses on delivering high-quality, competent nursing care within the anaesthetic environment. The successful candidate will assist in preparing patients and equipment for anaesthetic procedures, support the anaesthetic team during the peri-operative process, maintain patient safety standards, and contribute to the smooth operation of the theatre unit. The position reports directly to the Unit Manager: Theatre.

  • Assist the Registered Nurse (RN) Anaesthetics Nurse in preparing for anaesthetic procedures.
  • Prepare and check anaesthetic equipment, consumables, and theatre supplies before surgery.
  • Ensure anaesthetic trolleys and equipment are adequately stocked, maintained, and ready for use.
  • Assist with patient preparation and positioning for theatre procedures.
  • Support the RN in monitoring patients during the peri-operative period within scope of practice.
  • Assist with patient transfers, recovery preparation, and handover processes.
  • Maintain accurate nursing documentation and patient records.
  • Adhere to infection prevention, patient safety, and quality assurance protocols.
  • Assist with emergency equipment readiness and theatre preparedness.
  • Support efficient theatre workflow and multidisciplinary team collaboration.
  • Ensure cleanliness and readiness of the anaesthetic work area between cases.
  • Participate in stock control and management of anaesthetic consumables.

Education

  • Enrolled Nursing Certificate.
  • Registered with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as an Enrolled Nurse.

Experience

  • Minimum 1–2 years' anaesthetic theatre experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of anaesthetic equipment and patient monitoring systems.
  • Understanding of theatre protocols and infection prevention standards.
  • Ability to remain calm and focused in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification advantageous.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification advantageous.
