Role Purpose

The IBMi Systems Administrator (Junior) role forms part of the organisation’s technical succession pipeline, providing structured, accelerated development into a fully accountable IBMi administrator. The incumbent will work closely with senior engineers, supporting daily operations while gaining hands-on experience across IBM i, Power Systems, and storage platforms. The role requires a proactive learning mindset, with the expectation that the individual will rapidly build capability, take ownership of assigned functions, and progress towards independent operational responsibility.

Requirements

Qualification

  • Grade 12 or equivalent qualification
  • Relevant IT qualification

Experience

  • At least 3 - 5 years working experience on the IBM i (AS400)
  • Experience in financial services or large enterprise environments (advantageous)
  • Enterprise IBM i environments
  • IBM Power servers and virtualization (LPARs)
  • SAN/Flash storage platforms

Certifications

  • Operator or Administrator certification in relevant operating systems (preffered)
  • Relevant IBM Approved Badges

Duties and Responsibilities

IBM i System Administration

  • Administer and maintain IBM i (AS/400) environments across Production, DR, Development, and Test systems
  • Perform system configuration, upgrades, PTF management, and OS maintenance
  • Monitor:
    • Jobs, subsystems, job queues, and system logs
    • Disk usage, ASPs, and system performance
    • Troubleshoot system-level incidents and performance issues

IBM Power Systems

  • Manage IBM Power infrastructure via HMC (Hardware Management Console)
  • Perform:
    • Partition (LPAR) management
    • Firmware updates and maintenance tasks
    • Coordinate hardware changes, upgrades, and maintenance windows

IBM Flash Storage / SAN

  • Administer IBM FlashSystem and storage environments, including:
    • Storage provisioning and allocation
    • Performance monitoring and tuning
    • Replication and snapshot technologies (e.g., FlashCopy)
    • Manage SAN connectivity and ensure optimal performance and availability

High Availability & Disaster Recovery

  • MIMIX / IBM replication technologies
  • Execute:
    • Backup and restore procedures (BRMS, FlashCopy, VTL)
    • Disaster recovery testing and validation
    • Ensure RPO/RTO targets are met and continuously improved

Security & Compliance

  • Administer IBM i security, including:
    • User profiles, authorities, and access controls
    • Password policies and certificate management
    • Monitor and enforce compliance
    • Internal audit requirements

Performance & Capacity Management

  • Monitor system performance and proactively identify bottlenecks
  • Conduct:
    • Capacity planning (CPU, memory, storage)
    • Performance tuning across IBM i and infrastructure layers
  • Provide regular system health and performance reports

Integration & Middleware Support

  • Administer and support IBM i-based integrations, including:
    • MQ (queue and channel management)
    • Secure file transfers (e.g., Connect:Direct, XCOM)
  • Support application environments and business unit integrations

Incident, Change & Operations Support

  • Resolve production incidents and service requests within SLA
  • Participate in:
    • Change management processes
    • After-hours standby and major incident support
  • Collaborate with infrastructure, database, network, and application teams

Automation & Continuous Improvement

  • Develop and maintain automation scripts (CL, scripting tools)
  • Improve operational efficiency through process optimisation
  • Maintain documentation, runbooks, and standard operating procedures
