SUMMARY

Role Purpose

The Electrical Technician is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing electrical systems and equipment to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of power generation facilities. The role supports plant performance through preventative maintenance, fault diagnosis, electrical system optimisation, compliance with safety standards, and effective team leadership.

Key Responsibilities

Electrical Installation and Maintenance

Install, connect, and maintain electrical equipment, including power distribution and transmission systems

Maintain generators, transformers, high-voltage equipment, switchgear, and associated electrical infrastructure

Perform preventative maintenance inspections and servicing on electrical systems and equipment

Replace faulty components and ensure electrical systems operate efficiently and reliably

Monitor equipment performance and implement maintenance programmes to maximise equipment lifespan and plant availability

Ensure electrical systems meet operational and performance requirements

Troubleshooting and Repairs

Diagnose and resolve electrical faults on plant equipment and systems

Conduct testing, measurements, and repairs on electrical circuits and electronic components

Interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical drawings to identify and rectify faults

Respond to plant breakdowns and emergency situations to minimise operational downtime

Perform root cause analysis and implement corrective actions to prevent recurring failures

Safety and Compliance

Prepare and isolate high-voltage systems for maintenance and contractor activities

Install protective grounding systems and issue required electrical clearances

Ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety legislation, electrical regulations, and company safety procedures

Conduct regular safety inspections and risk assessments on electrical equipment and installations

Participate in safety meetings, audits, training programmes, and emergency response drills

Promote a strong safety culture and ensure safe working practices at all times

Operational Support

Coordinate with operations and maintenance teams to schedule maintenance activities with minimal disruption to plant operations

Support plant operators with non-routine operational activities when required

Plan and coordinate electrical shutdowns for maintenance, upgrades, and construction projects

Assist in maintaining optimal plant availability and operational efficiency

Procurement and Inventory Support

Engage with suppliers to obtain quotations for electrical equipment and services

Liaise with stores and procurement departments regarding material and equipment requirements

Verify delivered equipment and materials against specifications and purchase requirements

Assist with inventory management and stock control of critical electrical spares

Documentation and Reporting

Create, assign, and track maintenance work orders using Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS)

Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, repairs, inspections, and equipment history

Document incidents, equipment failures, and non-conformances

Assist with investigations, root cause analysis, and reporting requirements

Prepare technical reports and maintenance feedback for management

Team Leadership and Management

Manage and supervise technical personnel within the maintenance team

Provide guidance, support, and technical expertise to team members

Take ownership of maintenance activities and team performance on site

Participate in standby duties and respond to plant emergencies when required

Support management with process reviews, operational improvements, and technical recommendations

General Responsibilities

Perform all reasonable duties within the scope of the role as required by operational needs

Act in the best interests of the business and contribute to continuous improvement initiatives

Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and operational standards

POSITION INFO

Role Requirements

Associate Degree, Diploma, Apprenticeship, or Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field

Minimum 5 years’ post-apprenticeship experience in a similar electrical maintenance role within a power generation, industrial, manufacturing, or heavy engineering environment

Strong knowledge of electrical systems, power generation equipment, and maintenance procedures

Experience working with generators, transformers, switchgear, and high-voltage systems

Knowledge of PLC systems, SCADA systems, HMIs, and industrial communication networks

Experience with signal exchange systems such as Profibus, MPI, IFM, or similar technologies

Strong fault-finding and troubleshooting skills

Knowledge of ISO quality, safety, and environmental standards

Sound understanding of Occupational Health and Safety legislation and compliance requirements

Experience using Computerised Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS)

Strong report writing and documentation skills

Excellent verbal and written communication skills
