Our client, a leading environmental services and industrial operations business, is seeking an experienced Maintenance Manager to lead and manage all maintenance activities across a complex operational site. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the reliability, efficiency, safety, and compliance of all plant, equipment, infrastructure, and maintenance operations.

This role requires a hands-on technical leader with strong mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, and maintenance management experience, capable of driving preventative maintenance programs, managing maintenance teams, and ensuring operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities

Maintenance Management & Asset Reliability

  • Manage all preventative, planned, corrective, emergency, refurbishment, and replacement maintenance activities.
  • Ensure all plant, machinery, infrastructure, buildings, roads, workshops, wash bays, and ancillary equipment are maintained to the highest operational standards.
  • Implement and manage a Computerised Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Develop and execute preventative maintenance schedules to maximize equipment reliability and minimize downtime.
  • Conduct root cause analysis on equipment failures and implement sustainable corrective actions.
  • Ensure maintenance activities comply with OEM requirements, industry best practices, and applicable ISO standards.
  • Manage plant commissioning activities for new and modified equipment.

Electrical, Mechanical & Instrumentation Management

  • Oversee electrical, mechanical, instrumentation, PLC, and SCADA maintenance activities.
  • Manage electrical systems, instrumentation setups, process control systems, and automated equipment.
  • Ensure maintenance of plant control systems, electrical infrastructure, and instrumentation assets.
  • Support troubleshooting, diagnostics, and performance optimization of operational equipment.
  • Lead initiatives to improve plant efficiency, reliability, and overall equipment effectiveness.

Workshop & Contractor Management

  • Manage workshop operations, maintenance personnel, and external service providers.
  • Ensure maintenance and fabrication work meets required quality standards.
  • Monitor contractor performance and ensure all work complies with company procedures and safety requirements.
  • Control workshop tools, equipment, maintenance inventory, and spare parts.
  • Manage procurement requirements in line with company policies and approved budgets.

Team Leadership & Development

  • Lead, coach, mentor, and develop maintenance personnel.
  • Manage team performance, productivity, and discipline.
  • Conduct performance reviews and identify training and development requirements.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding, and succession planning initiatives within the maintenance department.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, continuous improvement, and safety.

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Act as the responsible person for maintenance activities in terms of Occupational Health and Safety requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant legislation, regulatory requirements, environmental standards, and company policies.
  • Maintain ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 compliance within maintenance operations.
  • Lead maintenance-related incident investigations and implement corrective actions.
  • Participate in emergency response planning and crisis management activities.
  • Ensure all maintenance documentation, inspections, certifications, and compliance records are maintained and up to date.

Budgeting, Reporting & Administration

  • Develop and manage maintenance budgets, forecasts, and expenditure controls.
  • Monitor maintenance costs and identify opportunities for cost reduction and operational improvements.
  • Maintain asset registers, calibration records, service reports, maintenance schedules, and inspection records.
  • Prepare management reports, project updates, and maintenance performance reports.
  • Ensure all maintenance activities are documented accurately and timeously.

Continuous Improvement

  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on equipment performance, reliability, safety, and cost optimization.
  • Identify and implement process improvement opportunities.
  • Stay informed on emerging technologies, maintenance methodologies, and industry best practices.
  • Support strategic projects aimed at improving plant performance and operational efficiency.

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12 (Matric).
  • Qualified Millwright, Mechanical Engineer, or Electrical Engineer.
  • Strong mechanical maintenance experience is essential.
  • Electrical Control and Instrumentation experience is essential.
  • Minimum 3–5 years' experience in a Maintenance Management role within an industrial, manufacturing, processing, environmental services, or heavy engineering environment.
  • Experience with PLC and SCADA systems.
  • Experience implementing and managing CMMS systems.
  • Strong understanding of preventative maintenance, asset management, and reliability engineering principles.
  • Computer literacy including Microsoft Excel, Word, Google Sheets, and maintenance management systems.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
