Our client, a leading environmental and industrial services organisation, is seeking an experienced Senior SHEQ Coordinator to drive Safety, Health, Environmental, and Quality compliance across its operations. The successful candidate will be responsible for implementing and maintaining SHEQ systems, ensuring compliance with applicable legislation, coordinating environmental initiatives, managing audits, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives across the business.

This role requires a proactive and hands-on professional with strong environmental management, occupational health and safety, compliance, and stakeholder engagement experience.

Key Responsibilities

SHEQ Management & Compliance

• Implement, maintain, and continuously improve SHEQ management systems across all operational sites.
• Ensure compliance with all relevant SHEQ legislation, regulations, standards, and client requirements.
• Conduct risk assessments and identify potential business, environmental, operational, and safety risks.
• Develop and implement mitigation measures to reduce risk exposure.
• Monitor compliance with Occupational Health and Safety legislation and environmental regulations.
• Ensure adherence to company SHEQ policies, procedures, standards, and operational requirements.
• Support the implementation and maintenance of ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 management systems.

Auditing & Continuous Improvement

• Coordinate and conduct internal SHEQ audits across operational sites.
• Prepare for and facilitate external audits, client audits, legal compliance audits, and certification audits.
• Investigate audit findings and implement corrective and preventative actions.
• Monitor SHEQ performance and provide recommendations for continuous improvement.
• Compile SHEQ reports, compliance reports, and management updates.

Environmental Management

• Monitor environmental compliance and ensure adherence to legislative and authorisation requirements.
• Coordinate environmental projects and sustainability initiatives.
• Conduct environmental risk assessments and evaluate environmental impacts on operations.
• Manage and monitor waste management, water management, and air quality compliance activities.
• Review and update environmental aspects and impacts registers.
• Conduct environmental inspections and audits.
• Develop and deliver environmental awareness campaigns and training initiatives.

Incident Investigation & Risk Management

• Participate in and support accident, incident, and near-miss investigations.
• Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions.
• Review monthly incident and near-miss trends and recommend preventative measures.
• Develop task-based risk assessments in conjunction with operational teams.
• Ensure emergency preparedness plans are maintained and tested through drills and exercises.

Training & Awareness

• Conduct SHEQ inductions for employees, contractors, and visitors.
• Evaluate SHEQ training requirements to ensure legal and operational compliance.
• Coordinate environmental and safety awareness initiatives.
• Promote a culture of safety, environmental responsibility, and operational excellence.
• Support operational teams with on-site SHEQ guidance and coaching.

Stakeholder Engagement

• Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, regulatory authorities, local communities, and interested parties.
• Participate in community engagement initiatives and environmental awareness programs.
• Liaise with government departments, regulatory bodies, consultants, and external stakeholders.
• Participate in external committees and reporting forums where required.

General Responsibilities

• Ensure availability and maintenance of fire-fighting, emergency response, and first aid equipment.
• Monitor PPE compliance and management across operations.
• Support operational teams with SHEQ-related activities and initiatives.
• Remain available for emergency incident response when required.
• Promote a positive, professional, and compliant working environment.

Minimum Requirements

• Relevant tertiary qualification in Safety, Health, Environment, Quality, Environmental Management, or a related field.
• SAMTRAC Certification.
• HIRA (Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment) training and experience.
• Minimum 3–5 years' experience within a SHEQ environment.
• Experience conducting incident and accident investigations.
• Strong knowledge of environmental legislation, regulations, and compliance requirements.
• Experience implementing and maintaining ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 systems.
• Waste management industry experience will be advantageous.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Computer literacy, including Google Workspace, cloud-based systems, and digital document management platforms.
• Ability to engage effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
