Job Advert Summary

A position for a Rail Supervisor has become available within the Operations Department at BTT Richards Bay.

The main purpose of the job is to effectively supervise, direct and co-ordinate Rail Operations on a shift basis ensuring the safe, effective and efficient Shunting of rail traffic within the BTT private siding yard and all rail movements entering and leaving the siding. To maintain high standards of safety, productivity, operational efficiency and compliance with company procedures and rail safety regulations.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

Ability to effectively communicate in English, both verbal and in writing

Ability to work with a high level of accuracy under minimum supervision

Good people management and customer service skills

Good leadership skills and easily adapt to change

Computer literacy with proficiency in Ms Office

Understanding of BTT emergency procedures

Knowledge of the HR policies and systems

SAP systems experience

Minimum Requirements

Grade 12 with Mathematics and Science

Supervisory Certification advantageous

NQF level 4 advantageous

5 years’ experience in a chemical or petro-chemical industry

Knowledge of Railway Safety Management (SANS 3000)

Knowledge of SHEQ systems (ISO45001, ISO14001 & ISO9001)

Completed all internal training as per the training Matrix advantageous.

Duties and Responsibilities

Plan, organise, lead and control shift activities.

Monitor and control all rail statistics with the Shunting Team to verify Rail tanker status/position in the BTT yard.

Monitor rail tankers standing times on site, ensuring that they don’t incur wagon delays charges. Report all rail tanker delays immediately to Logistics department.

Evaluate yard performance to ensure a productive and incident free working environment

Plan the accommodation of trains and siding traffic around occupations and interaction with TFR.

Plan and control shunting deviations within the yard and siding and implement preventative measures to minimise delays on rail traffic.

Liaise with all stakeholders, TFR, and clients with regards to all rail activities to ensure effective and efficient control and communication of all rail activities on site

Conduct rail safety inspections in accordance with RSR

Supervise relevant team members in line with departmental KPIs.

Ensure plant, equipment and systems are operated as per design functionality and comply with the standard operating procedures and work instructions.

Conduct plant inspections and rectify defects and unsafe conditions.

Participate in emergency response activities, audits and investigations.

Conduct on the job training for all personnel under his/her responsibility.

Ensure sound communication between departments to ensure smooth operation and avoid delays.

Conduct team-briefing sessions to keep team members abreast on matters affecting them.

Conduct performance reviews, disciplinary hearings and grievance enquiries

Maintain sound relationships between team members and keep team members motivated.
