PURPOSE OF THE JOB: To oversee the planning, execution, and delivery of a portfolio of construction projects from start to completion.
Minimum Qualifications And Requirements
- Grade 12/NQF Level 4 qualification is essential
- Construction/Engineering degree or related field is essential
- Professional certifications (e.g., PMP, CCM) is essential
- MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is essential
- 10-15 years in managing large-scale construction projects preferably in an underground mining environment is essential.
Competencies
- Strong knowledge of mining operations, heavy equipment, and construction methodologies
- Strong knowledge of construction methods, materials, and legal regulations.
- Proven track record in managing large-scale infrastructure projects in challenging mining environments (i.e. brownfields projects)
- Proficiency in project management software (e.g., MS Project, Primavera, AutoCAD, SAP)
Key Performance Areas
- Interprets construction drawings understanding client requirements and sets achievable goals.
- Prepares detailed timelines, delegates tasks, and ensures that work proceeds according to schedule.
- Drives coordination between different teams—such as architects, design and construction engineers, contractors, and subcontractors
- Develops budgets, tracks expenses, and ensures that materials, labour, and services are procured cost- effectively.
- Tenders adjudication and pricing submissions, balancing quality with financial efficiency.
- Ensures that projects comply with all relevant laws and safety standards.
- Develops and enforces SHE (Safety, Health and Environmental) plans.
- Conducts risk assessments, develops contingency plans, and problem solving.
- Oversees construction of mine shafts, tunnels, haul roads, processing plants, and tailings dams.
- Ensure structural integrity and operational readiness of facilities.
- Manages design change, equipment failure, contractual or workforce issues.
- Develops quality control processes, monitors workmanship, and ensures that final outputs meet client expectations and regulatory requirements.
- Conducts feasibility studies and assesses site conditions to determine project viability.
- Assists in drafting budgets, creates schedules, and prepares tender documentation.
- Works with design teams and engineers to align technical plans with practical construction abilities or constraints.
- Identifies risks early on and establishes contingency plans.
- Provides regular progress reports.
- Conducts site inspections to maintain quality standards and rectifies issues immediately.
- Coordinates contractors, suppliers, and service providers to avoid delays.
- Enforces strict compliance with mining safety standards (MSHA, OSHA, or local equivalents).
- Ensures environmental regulations and sustainability practices are integrated into construction activities.
- Ensures smooth handover processes, including walkthroughs with stakeholders.
- Oversees the completion of snag lists and confirm that outstanding tasks are addressed.
- Manages document close-out, including compliance certificates, as-built drawings, and warranty information.
- Schedules final inspections and ensures that all legal obligations have been fulfilled.
- Assists clients/stakeholders with transition plans, including maintenance schedules or operational guidance.
