SUMMARY
Compliance Officer
POSITION INFO
Key Responsibilities
Licensing & Regulatory Compliance
▸ Ensure staff hold valid gambling board licences where required; manage renewal calendars and board submission processes
▸ Maintain all business licences across applicable Provincial Gambling Boards; liaise proactively with each Board on renewals, amendments, and new product approvals
▸ Monitor and implement changes to national and provincial gambling legislation, interpreting impact for the business and recommending responsive action
▸ Manage the approval process for all new betting software, and platforms through applicable gaming legislation
FICA, POPIA & Financial Crime
▸ Own and maintain the FICA Risk Management and Compliance Programme (RMCP) for Bet.co.za; ensure it is current, approved, and implemented across all relevant functions
▸ Oversee KYC/EDD processes; review escalated cases and suspicious transaction reports (STRs); ensure timely reporting to the Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC)
▸ Drive POPIA compliance across the business — privacy notices, data retention schedules, data subject access requests, incident response, and engagement with the Information Regulator
▸ Assist with interpretation of FICA and POPIA matters to the operational teams, product, and technology
Audits, Assessments & Corrective Action
▸ Execute department-level compliance assessment programmes; produce accurate, well-reasoned audit findings with clear corrective action plans and deadlines
▸ Track findings to closure; escalate material non-compliance to management and, where required, to the relevant Gambling Board
▸ Prepare and submit all statutory compliance reports to Provincial Gambling Boards on schedule
Responsible Gambling
▸ Implement and monitor responsible gambling controls in line with NRGP requirements and Gambling Board licence conditions
▸ Identify players requiring safer gambling interactions; co-ordinate with operational teams on intervention protocols, self-exclusion management, and dispute resolution
Advisory & Stakeholder Engagement
▸ Act as the primary compliance adviser to internal departments — product, marketing, finance, IT & Dev — providing practical, compliance grounded guidance
▸ Build and sustain constructive relationships with all relevant Provincial Gambling Boards through regular, transparent communication
▸ Draft, review, and advise on internal policies, procedures, and contractual terms for regulatory compliance implications
▸ Represent the organisation in regulatory meetings, inspections, and correspondence
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
Requirements
▸ Relevant degree or diploma from a recognised South African institution (essential — this is the minimum legal qualification for this role)
▸ Minimum 3 years'''' post-qualification experience in a legal, compliance, or regulatory affairs role
▸ Experience in the online gambling, fintech, or financial services sector
▸ Demonstrable working knowledge of FICA, POPIA, and the National Gambling Act regulatory framework
▸ Experience conducting compliance audits, drafting audit reports, and managing corrective action plans
▸ Proven track record of resolving compliance matters and liaising with regulators
Advantageous
▸ Admitted Attorney of the High Court of South Africa
▸ Postgraduate qualification in Compliance, Risk Management, or equivalent (e.g. PGDip in Compliance, MCom: Risk Management)
▸ Familiarity with GRC platforms and compliance management software (e.g. LexisNexis compliance tools)
▸ Understanding of AML/CFT typologies and experience reviewing STRs
COMPETENCIES & PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES
▸ Strong compliance reasoning and written communication — you can translate complex regulation into clear, actionable guidance
▸ High attention to detail and sound judgement in ambiguous, high-stakes situations
▸ Ability to work independently and manage competing compliance deadlines without dropping standards
▸ Commercial awareness — understanding how compliance enables sustainable business, not just how it constrains it
▸ Integrity and professional confidentiality as non-negotiable personal standards
▸ Collaborative and stakeholder-oriented, comfortable engaging with Gambling Boards, senior management, and operational teams alike
