Job Purpose
An automotive machinist specializes in repairing and fabricating internal combustion engine components by interpreting technical blueprints to operate machinery like lathes, mills, and grinders. Key responsibilities include diagnosing engine faults, surfacing heads and blocks, boring cylinders, grinding crankshafts, and inspecting parts for precision, safety, and compliance with manufacturer specifications.
Key Responsibilities
- Engine Component Reconditioning: Rebuild, repair, and renew engine components like cylinder heads, engine blocks, and crankshafts.
- Machinery Operation: Set up and operate precision tools including grinders, boring machines, and lathes to machine parts to exact specifications.
- Inspection & Diagnosis: Dismantle, clean, and thoroughly inspect engine parts for cracks, wear, and other faults.
- Precision Measurement: Use micrometres, callipers, and other precision tools to verify dimensions and tolerances.
- Technical Interpretation: Read and interpret blueprints, technical drawings, and manufacturer specifications to plan machining operations.
- Maintenance & Safety: Perform routine maintenance on shop machinery and adhere to strict safety protocols.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives in machining processes and
standards.
- Ensure compliance with ISO 9001 and other applicable quality standards.
Qualification, Experience And Competencies
Qualifications & Experience
- Matric/Grade 12
- Trade Test Certificate in Automotive machining.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in a machining environment.
- Experience in earthmoving equipment will be advantageous
- Experience with CNC and conventional machines.
- Strong understanding of technical drawings and tolerances.
- Strong knowledge of GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing)
