Karan Beef, one of South Africa's leading beef producers, is seeking an experienced and results-driven Sanitation Manager to join our team.

The successful candidate will be responsible for leading and managing all sanitation activities within our abattoir operations, ensuring the highest standards of hygiene, food safety, and regulatory compliance are consistently maintained. This role requires a strong background in abattoir or meat-processing environments, with proven experience in sanitation management, team leadership, and implementing effective cleaning and sanitation programs.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Develop, implement, and maintain comprehensive hygiene protocols and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Oversee and manage Sanitation Supervisors and sanitation teams to ensure compliance with all Sanitation Standard Operating Procedures and the timely start-up of the plant each production day.
  • Ensure sanitation teams maintain high standards of cleanliness and effectively eliminate microbial contamination and load throughout the facility.
  • Develop and manage a Master Sanitation Schedule (MSS), incorporating daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning activities.
  • Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate sanitation personnel, while managing shift allocations and workforce planning.
  • Enforce compliance with all health, safety, and food safety standards, including HACCP, GMP, FSSC 22000, and local environmental regulations and standards.
  • Manage inventory levels of cleaning chemicals, personal protective equipment (PPE), and sanitation equipment, ensuring safe storage and cost-effective usage.
  • Oversee Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programmes and ensure safe and compliant waste disposal practices.
  • Conduct routine site inspections, document findings, investigate sanitation-related issues, and implement corrective actions where necessary.
  • Ad hoc functions.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Grade 12.
  • Diploma or bachelor’s degree in food science, Microbiology, Environmental Health, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years' supervisory experience in sanitation, hygiene management, or quality assurance within an FMCG or food production environment.
  • Sound knowledge of industrial cleaning chemicals, microbial control measures, and Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
  • Strong leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to foster and promote and maintain a culture of hygiene, food safety, and compliance throughout the department.
