SUMMARY
Our client, a Greenfields mining operation in KwaZulu-Natal, is seeking to appoint an Environmental Officer
POSITION INFO
Key Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with all applicable environmental legislation, permits, licences, and regulatory conditions.
- Implement and maintain site-specific Environmental Management Programmes (EMPrs).
- Monitor and manage environmental risks associated with mining and related site activities.
- Lead water resource protection initiatives, including water quality monitoring, conservation, and pollution prevention.
- Implement controls to prevent contamination or depletion of surface and groundwater resources.
- Monitor and report on environmental impacts with particular focus on water: access, sanitation interfaces, and surrounding community risk exposure.
- Conduct environmental monitoring programmes including water, waste, air quality, rehabilitation, & biodiversity components.
- Compile and submit statutory environmental compliance reports to relevant government authorities, including:
- Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE)
- Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment (DFFE)
- Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS)
- Support environmental audits, inspections, and compliance investigations, ensuring timely corrective actions.
- Assist with rehabilitation planning and progressive closure requirements.
- Maintain accurate environmental records, datasets, and compliance documentation.
- Liaise with regulators, consultants, and internal operational teams to ensure ongoing compliance alignment.
- Promote environmental awareness and compliance discipline across site operations and contractors.
Minimum Requirements
- Degree or Diploma in Environmental Management, Environmental Science, Natural Sciences, Hydrology, or related field.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in environmental management within the mining sector or heavy industry.
- Proven experience in environmental compliance management at operational site level.
- Strong working knowledge of South African environmental legislation and mining regulatory frameworks.
- Demonstrated experience in water resource management, monitoring programmes, and pollution prevention strategies.
- Experience preparing and submitting statutory environmental compliance reports.
- Familiarity with Environmental Management Programmes (EMPrs), Water Use Licences (WULs), and Environmental Authorisations.
- Valid driver’s licence and willingness to be site-based.
Advantageous
- Experience in Greenfields or developing mining operations.
- Exposure to complex water-sensitive operational environments.
- Working knowledge of ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems.
- Experience managing environmental consultants and specialist studies.
