We are seeking a Senior Field Service Technician – NDT/GDI to join our Team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the performing and coordinating of Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) and Digital Gear Inspections (DGI) on grinding mills to support safe, reliable operation and lifecycle performance. They will support the growth of Metso’s DGI and NDT inspection services business in Africa by providing technical expertise during customer sales engagements, supporting proposal development, and helping convert opportunities into executed inspection scopes.

The role combines field execution (inspection delivery, reporting, and recommendations) with commercial support (technical scoping, value argumentation, customer presentations, and collaboration with Sales) to increase market adoption of NDT and DGI services. Expectation after 1-year ramp-up is to have a 60% utilization with the rest of time focused on sales support.

In this position, you will report to the Field Services Manager.

This position is mainly located in Alrode, Gauteng.

TEAM YOU’LL BELONG TO

You will join our FSE Team and work closely with internal and external stakeholders, such as Sales, Site Account Managers, Field Services Operations, Technical Sales Support, HSE, Global Field Services, Customer Maintenance, Reliability, Engineering, Operations, Procurement Teams and Site Contractors where applicable.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Inspection Execution (NDT & Digital Gear Inspections)

Conduct NDT inspections in accordance with applicable standards, procedures, and customer/site requirements

Perform Digital Gear Inspections on grinding mills including data capture, validation, and interpretation

Plan inspection activities (scope, method selection, tools, access requirements, permits) in coordination with site stakeholders

Ensure inspection work is performed safely, efficiently, and to the required quality level

Produce clear, accurate inspection reports including results, acceptance criteria, findings, and recommendations

Identify emerging risks (cracks, wear, misalignment indicators, gear condition concerns, etc.) and communicate promptly to the customer and internal stakeholders

Support troubleshooting and reliability improvement actions based on inspection outcomes

Quality, Safety & Compliance

Follow all HSE requirements, site rules, and Metso safety procedures; actively promote a safety-first culture

Ensure NDT activities comply with relevant codes/standards and that equipment is fit-for-purpose and calibrated where required

Maintain proper documentation and traceability (procedures, calibration records, inspection records, and reports)

Customer Interface & Field Service Coordination

Act as a technical specialist on-site, building customer confidence through professional execution and communication

Coordinate with Field Services / site teams to align inspections with shutdown plans, maintenance activities, and operational constraints

Participate in pre-job meetings, toolbox talks, and post-job close-out discussions with customers

Sales & Market Growth Support

Support Sales by providing technical input for opportunity qualification, scope definition, and method selection for NDT and Digital Gear Inspection services

Assist with proposal/tender technical content, including recommended inspection programs, deliverables, timelines, and execution requirements

Support customer presentations and technical discussions to explain inspection value, limitations, and outcomes

Provide market feedback (customer needs, competitor activities, pricing signals, common failure modes) to help develop and refine service offerings

Contribute to achieving regional service growth targets by enabling repeatable, high-quality execution and strong customer satisfaction

Administration & Continuous Improvement

Maintain accurate records of inspections, reports, and lessons learned

Contribute to development/improvement of inspection procedures, templates, and best practices

Support internal training/knowledge sharing related to NDT and Digital Gear Inspection services

WHO YOU ARE

Matric (Grade 12)

Technical qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy, or a related technical discipline (or equivalent practical experience)

Valid Level 2 NDT certification

Proven field experience conducting NDT inspections in industrial environments (mining preferred)

Experience working around grinding mills and heavy rotating equipment (girth gears, pinions, bearings, trunnions, shell components) is highly advantageous

Experience in Africa / willingness to travel extensively within the region

Experience delivering customer-facing technical services, including reporting and recommendations

Demonstrated ability to work on shutdowns/outages and in remote site conditions

Familiarity with inspection planning, acceptance criteria, and inspection documentation practices

Good working knowledge of quality systems and HSE requirements in field service environments

Understanding grinding mills application and technology is considered advantageous
