Technical Chief Estimator

We’re looking for a senior, commercially-minded Technical Chief Estimator to take full ownership of our client's estimating function — while also leading marketing and business development - Johannesburg

Purpose

To take full ownership of estimating end-to-end, combined with the marketing and business development function as a single senior mandate. This includes producing and pricing the quote book, setting and defending margin discipline, owning relationships and the pipeline that generates work, and acting as the product owner of a structured estimating tool and rate library.

Key Responsibilities

• Estimating Leadership Own the quoting function across cladding, louvres, screens, and signage. Take responsibility for pricing, mark-up strategy, and preliminaries & general (P&G) discipline. Lead bid/no-bid decisions and manage high volumes of revisions (Rev 2/3/4, etc.).
• Rate Library & Estimating Tool Ownership Act as the product owner of the structured estimating tool. Build and maintain a single, consolidated rate library and encode pricing logic based on more than two years of historical cost data.
• Marketing & Business Development Own the inbound pipeline, including relationships with quantity surveyors (QSs), architects, and contractors. Manage CRM systems and follow-ups, generate leads from tender feeds, prepare proposals and capability statements, oversee digital presence, and track competitive intelligence.
• Knowledge Capture & Succession Reduce key-person dependency by codifying estimating knowledge and processes within systems. Mentor team members and build backup capacity.
• Cross-Functional Interface Collaborate closely with the drawing office, factory and site teams, finance, and the Business Systems & Performance Manager.

Reporting and Position

This is a senior management role reporting to a director (initially Alex on the technical/commercial side during onboarding). The position is not a board-level appointment. The role operates alongside the Business Systems & Performance Manager, with ownership of the estimating tool as it is developed.

Profile to Look For

• A senior estimator with experience in façade/cladding or related construction metalwork environments. Must be fluent in activity-based, process-by-process cost build-ups—not only rate-per-square-metre pricing.
• Strong commercial acumen, with the ability to manage client relationships and business development responsibilities. The estimator serves as a key commercial interface.
• Systems-literate, with the ability to own and work within a structured estimating tool and rate library environment—not limited to spreadsheets.
• Proven ability to mentor others, build backup capacity, and bring an experienced team along.

Indicative Salary Package

The total cost of employment is expected to be in the range of R600,000 to R900,000 per year, depending on seniority and experience.
