Permanent position at an engineering company located in Pretoria in the Security and Military / Defence industry.

Introduction

A company in the research and development environment is seeking a Optical specialist technician. The company is located in Pretoria and is a market leading international company specialising in the development of Electro-Optical (EO) assemblies.

  • Provide an Engineering service in the EO field that includes the following tasks:
    • Interpretation of system / product requirements applicable to optics design considerations.
    • Interfacing with other engineering disciplines and specialists in the optical, mechanical, electronic, software etc. fields.
    • Participates in process development efforts that expand capabilities, increase yield, and improve cycle time and performance.
    • Assembly and alignment of optical elements and products.
    • Precision manufacturing of optical elements.
    • Serial production of products.
    • Lab testing and evaluation of produced designs.
    • Systems integration and testing with other engineering disciplines.
    • Preparation of Data-pack for serial production.
  • Engineering management support including but not limited to:
      • Interfacing with the mechanical production facility.
      • Interfacing with the optics production facility.
      • Procurement of engineering materials and equipment.
      • Procurement of manufactured items.
  • Any other reasonable tasks given to the employee.
  • Occasional international travel to clients or the parent company.
  • National Diploma, Technical Diploma, Trade Qualification or equivalent qualification in Optics, Photonics, Electro-Optical Engineering, Electronics or a related technical field (required).
  • Minimum 3–5 years' experience in optical assembly, alignment and testing within a manufacturing or engineering environment (required).
  • Specialist knowledge (required / preferred):
    • Assembly and integration of optical and electro-optical components and sub-systems (required).
    • Optical alignment of lenses, mirrors, prisms, laser components and imaging systems (required).
    • Understanding of optical principles, including reflection, refraction, focal length, image formation and aberrations (required).
    • Experience with optical test and measurement equipment such as collimators, autocollimators, interferometers, alignment telescopes and optical benches (required).
    • Ability to interpret optical drawings, assembly procedures and technical documentation (required).
    • Knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) and ISO drawing standards (required).
    • Precision assembly skills for high-tolerance optical and electro-mechanical systems (required).
    • Strong soldering, wiring and electronic assembly skills (preferred).
    • Experience working in a clean-room or contamination-controlled environment (required).
    • Knowledge of optical adhesives, bonding processes and handling of delicate optical components (required).
    • Familiarity with laser safety requirements and procedures (preferred).
    • Experience with environmental testing, optical performance verification and acceptance testing (preferred).
    • Basic understanding of electro-optical systems, thermal imaging systems, day/night vision systems or laser-based products (preferred).
    • Microsoft Office tools (required).
    • Defence, aerospace or military electro-optical industry experience (preferred).
