Site Engineer - Renewable Energy - Wind, Solar PV & BESS

WBHO Construction (Pty) Ltd

Job Summary

Are you a driven, hands-on engineer who wants to be part of a business constructing renewable energy projects at scale? We are growing our team and actively seeking motivated individuals — including recent graduates and those with up to five years of engineering, construction, or project delivery experience — who are eager to develop their skills on site and build a long-term career in the renewable energy sector.

In this site-based role, typically working full time on site with monthly R&R, you will report to the Site Agent and support the construction, quality assurance, testing, commissioning, and handover of utility-scale Solar PV, Wind, and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects. You will be exposed to the full spectrum of project delivery activities, including electrical, mechanical, and civil works, gaining practical experience across generation facilities, substations, balance of plant infrastructure, and grid connection systems.

This role is intended to develop future construction leaders. Successful candidates will gain broad exposure to project execution and progressively take responsibility for larger work packages and multidisciplinary construction scopes as their experience develops.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist the Site Agent in supervising and coordinating all construction and commissioning activities on site.
  • Review and interpret electrical, civil, mechanical, and construction drawings, schematics, specifications, and method statements to support construction execution.
  • Monitor and report daily progress of works, including installation, testing, commissioning, quality, safety, and productivity metrics.
  • Conduct inspections and quality checks to ensure compliance with project specifications, approved designs, quality plans, and applicable standards, including SANS, IEC, NRS, and client requirements.
  • Support implementation of Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs), quality control procedures, non-conformance reporting, punch list management, and project handover documentation.
  • Coordinate with subcontractors, suppliers, consultants, and internal project teams to resolve technical and construction issues and maintain project progress.
  • Assist with planning and tracking construction schedules, material deliveries, equipment utilisation, and resource allocation.
  • Assist with construction completion, pre-commissioning, commissioning, testing, energisation, and performance verification activities for:
    • Solar PV arrays and trackers;
    • Wind turbine balance of plant works;
    • Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS);
    • Inverters and power conversion systems;
    • MV and HV cable networks;
    • Transformers and substations;
    • Grid connection infrastructure and associated balance of plant systems.
  • Assist in the supervision and coordination of electrical, mechanical, and civil work packages, including roads, drainage, fencing, foundations, cable trenching, earthworks, and associated infrastructure works.
  • Maintain site documentation, including inspection records, test reports, commissioning records, daily site reports, snag lists, and quality dossiers.
  • Participate in toolbox talks, risk assessments, permit-to-work processes, incident investigations, and daily HSE inspections.
  • Promote and maintain a strong health, safety, environmental, and quality culture across all site activities.
  • Provide technical support and guidance to technicians, artisans, apprentices, and subcontractor personnel as required.

Support project controls activities, including progress measurement, quantity tracking, variation identification, and construction reporting.

Required Qualifications & Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree or National Diploma in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline. Electrically qualified candidates are strongly preferred.
  • Qualifications from recognised universities, universities of technology, or equivalent accredited institutions will be considered.
  • 0–5 years of engineering, construction, or project delivery experience. Recent graduates are encouraged to apply.
  • Experience on renewable energy, transmission, distribution, substation, industrial, mining, or infrastructure projects will be advantageous.
  • Knowledge of MV/HV electrical installations, cabling systems, transformers, switchgear, protection systems, and grid-connected infrastructure is preferred.
  • Understanding of construction quality management systems, testing, and commissioning processes.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, construction documentation, schematics, and technical specifications.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organisational abilities.
  • Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary project team in a contractor-led or EPC project environment.
  • Valid driver’s licence and ability to travel extensively to project sites.
  • Registration as a Candidate Engineer, Candidate Engineering Technologist, or Candidate Engineering Technician with ECSA, or eligibility to register, will be advantageous.
  • Registration with SACPCMP as a Candidate Construction Manager or Candidate Construction Project Manager, or eligibility to register, will be advantageous.
Preferred Attributes
  • Willingness to travel and reside on remote project sites for extended periods.
  • Exposure to utility-scale renewable energy projects and EPC construction practices.
  • Strong academic record demonstrating analytical and engineering capability.
  • Familiarity with commissioning and testing of inverters, transformers, protection systems, substations, and BESS facilities.
  • Knowledge of project management, scheduling, reporting, and document control systems.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
  • Familiarity with project scheduling and document management platforms such as Primavera P6, Microsoft Project, Aconex, Procore, Autodesk Construction Cloud, or similar systems.
  • Exposure to contract administration, progress measurement, quantity tracking, variation management, and construction cost control.
  • Proactive, safety-conscious, and solution-oriented mindset.
  • Genuine enthusiasm for renewable energy infrastructure and a desire to develop practical construction management skills through site-based project delivery.

Ambition to grow within the business, progressing from Site Engineer to Senior Site Engineer, Site Agent, Construction Manager, Project Manager, and broader leadership roles as experience and capability develop.

Benefits
  • Competitive salary and performance-based bonus.
  • Medical aid and retirement fund contributions.
  • Site accommodation provided during project rotations.
  • Hands-on exposure to utility-scale Solar PV, Wind, BESS, substation, and grid connection projects from day one.
  • Structured career development and mentorship from experienced construction professionals.
  • Clear progression pathway into senior engineering, construction management, and project management roles.
  • Dynamic, collaborative, and performance-driven project environment.
  • Opportunity to contribute directly to South Africa’s energy transition and infrastructure development.

Interested candidates should submit a detailed CV together with a cover letter outlining their qualifications, experience, and motivation for the role.
