Talisman Hire Pietermaritzburg is looking for a dynamic, hardworking, and self-motivated Salesman to join our team. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced individual to make a significant impact in the plant and tool hire industry. The ideal candidate should excel in customer service, possess strong sales skills, and have a solid understanding of operational and administrative duties. You will be responsible for managing external sales, providing excellent customer relations, and contributing to the growth of the business.

As a Salesman for Talisman Hire, you will cover a portion of KZN, ensuring excellent customer service and satisfaction. You will manage various sales tasks, operations, and staff-related responsibilities, ensuring everything runs smoothly and efficiently. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys variety, challenges, and working in a fast-paced environment.

Sales & Customer Relations

  • Manage external activities, to meet customer needs and build strong relationships.
  • Provide expert advice on plant and tool hire, ensuring customers are well-informed about the best solutions for their needs.
  • Actively seek out new revenue opportunities and develop relationships with new and existing clients.
  • Build rapport with customers, handling inquiries, providing product recommendations, and following up to ensure satisfaction.
  • Conduct site visits and product demonstrations as needed to showcase equipment and services.

Operational Support & Administration

  • Manage equipment hire bookings and returns using the Orange Hire Software Programme, ensuring accuracy in transactions.
  • Liaise with customers regarding orders, queries, collections, and deliveries, ensuring smooth coordination and timely service.
  • Follow up on deliveries, collections, repairs, and the ordering of spares for equipment
  • Handle operational needs that arise during working hours, ensuring any issues are resolved efficiently.
  • Assist with counter sales, workshop and drivers co-ordination, general administration and ensure tasks are completed when the Hire Desk Sales and Workshop Admin team are on leave or unavailable.

Marketing & Business Development

  • Actively participate in canvassing for business across the construction, industrial, government, and mechanical trades.
  • Promote the Talisman Hire brand and services to potential clients and key stakeholders.
  • Contribute to general marketing and brand-building activities to increase company visibility and attract new customers.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Handle any ad-hoc duties related to the role, including administrative and operational support as required.
  • Proactively reach out to existing clients and conduct regular follow-ups to ensure continued satisfaction and loyalty.
  • A minimum of 5 years proven experience in counter and external sales, preferably in the plant and tool hire or construction industry.
  • Strong mechanical knowledge and experience in plant and tool hire is highly advantageous.
  • A proven track record in meeting targets and building rapport with high level stakeholders.
  • Ability to work in a team, fostering a collaborative work environment.
  • Strong understanding of business and marketing planning, financial acumen, strategic influencing, commercial negotiation and judgement
  • High-level Presentation Skills - Quantitative and qualitative report writing, bid and presentation preparation, tender preparation
  • Excellent communication, negotiation, and customer service skills.
  • Computer literate with good administrative skills
  • Experience with hire software or similar systems will be an advantage.
  • Highly organized with attention to detail, ensuring all tasks are completed accurately and on time.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, managing multiple tasks and priorities.
  • A proactive problem-solver who thrives in a dynamic and fast-paced environment.
  • Sense of urgency, accurate, meticulous and self-disciplined
  • Strong interpersonal skills and a customer-focused approach.
  • A valid Code 8 Driver’s Licence is required.
  • Knowledge and experience in the plant and tool hire industry will be highly advantageous.
