Job Purpose

To assess, evaluate, and underwrite both commercial and personal (domestic) insurance risks in line with company guidelines, ensuring profitability while delivering excellent service to brokers and clients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess and underwrite new business, renewals, and endorsements for both commercial and domestic insurance policies
  • Analyse risk exposures and determine appropriate terms, conditions, and pricing
  • Review and interpret underwriting guidelines, policy wordings, and risk reports
  • Maintain strong relationships with brokers, clients, and internal stakeholders
  • Provide technical underwriting support and advice to brokers
  • Ensure all underwriting decisions comply with regulatory and company standards
  • Identify and mitigate potential risks to maintain a profitable portfolio
  • Process policy documentation accurately and within agreed turnaround times
  • Handle referrals, queries, and exceptions professionally and efficiently
  • Monitor portfolio performance and recommend corrective actions where necessary

Key Requirements

Qualifications

  • Matric (Grade 12) – essential
  • Relevant insurance qualification (e.g. NQF Level 4/5 in Short-Term Insurance or equivalent)
  • RE5 certification – advantageous / preferred

Experience

  • 3–5 years underwriting experience in both commercial and domestic insurance
  • Strong understanding of short-term insurance products and underwriting principles
  • Experience working with brokers and intermediaries

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong analytical and risk assessment skills
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
  • Sound knowledge of underwriting guidelines and compliance requirements
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Good negotiation and decision-making ability
  • Proficiency in insurance systems and Microsoft Office
