The Sugar Milling Research Institute (SMRI) is looking to fill the vacancy of Analytical Specialist.
Purpose of the Role
Responsible for sugar related analyses required by the Analytical Laboratory and the Research Team.
Minimum requirements
Qualifications:
- Analytical Chemistry/Biotechnology Diploma or Degree
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience working in an Analytical Laboratory environment
- Sound knowledge of Chromatography
Competencies
- Deliver accurate, reliable analytical results in line with quality, productivity, and turnaround requirements.
- Apply sound knowledge of analytical chemistry techniques, including chromatography and spectroscopic methods.
- Interpret, record, and report analytical data using LIMS and other relevant systems.
- Ensure that quality and housekeeping standards are complied with that equipment is calibrated accurately and maintained.
- Undertake specialist analytical functions as and when required using wet chemical and NIRS analyses.
- Troubleshoot to find solutions and participate in method development and continuous improvement techniques.
- Responsible for procurement function for the Chemistry Laboratory and research teams, as well as safety budgetary requirements.
- Act as SHE representative ensuring compliance with applicable SMRI and laboratory SHE policies, procedures and practices, including risk assessments, incident investigations, and HAZCHEM compliance.
- Plan and prioritise workloads effectively to manage high volumes and deadlines.
- Competence in the use of instrumentation viz. NIR and UV Spectrometers, gas chromatographs, RotoVaps, PH meters, balances, polarimeters and refractometers is advantageous.
- Required to assist with Analytical refresher training and mill laboratory audits.
- Prepared to work outside of South African borders as and when required – a valid passport is required.
- A valid Driver’s licence would be advantageous.
