The overall purpose of the position

The Junior Draughtsperson will be responsible for assisting the engineering team with general and detailed draughting work for commercial and utility-scale solar projects. This role offers an excellent opportunity to develop technical skills within a fast-growing, dynamic renewable energy environment.

Location: Cape Town

Summary of Responsibilities

Technical

  • Assist with general and detailed mechanical, structural, civil, and electrical (Single Line Diagrams/SLDs) drawing layouts for utility-scale solar projects.

  • Perform site visits and field measurements when required.

  • Assist with taking measurements and performing calculations from drawings to determine accurate equipment quantities for projects.

  • Work closely with the design and engineering teams to perform general technical tasks as needed.

Administrative/Operational

  • Ensure all drawings adhere strictly to company and IEC-approved standards, symbols, and draughting methodologies.

  • Set up and accurately populate project-specific Bills of Quantities (BoQ).

  • Populate cable and label schedules based on designs provided by Senior Engineers.

  • Conduct Quality Control (QC) checks on drawings as requested by the engineering team.

  • Assist the engineering team in populating and formatting design reports.

  • Carry out other relevant duties and ad-hoc tasks as assigned.

Interpersonal

  • A strong desire to absorb feedback, learn from senior engineering professionals, and actively work on improving technical skills.

  • A proactive approach to tasks, with the initiative to seek out new learning opportunities or assist the team when current tasks are complete.

  • The ability to clearly articulate ideas, ask clarifying questions when unsure of a brief, and comfortably discuss drawing modifications with engineers.

Minimum Requirements

  • At minimum, a Matric/Grade 12 with a post-matric qualification in technical drawing (e.g., Drawing Office Practice, Multi-Disciplinary Drawing Office Practice, or equivalent).

  • Must have 1 to 2 years of professional work experience in a draughting position (Junior level).

  • Prior experience in the Utility Renewable Energy industry or building services sector will be advantageous.

  • Knowledge of AutoCAD will be advantageous.

  • Must be fully proficient in English (verbal and written communication)

  • Must be fully computer literate (MS Office Suite and Google App Suite)
