Senior Mini Substation Designer

The leading Transformer Manufacturing Firm in South Africa is seeking a skilled and experienced Senior Minisub Designer to join their team in Wadeville and Heidelberg.

The successful candidate will be responsible for executing complete mechanical designs, including enclosures and LV panels, for new and repair miniature substations up to 2 MVA and 33 kV. This role will also include preparing relevant documentation, assisting with tenders and enquiries, supporting internal departments, and ensuring design technology is implemented according to company guidelines and standards.

In order to be considered for this role you must have the following:

  • Matric
  • Mechanical Engineering qualification — BTech Degree or equivalent
  • At least 5 years’ experience in miniature substation or LV panel design and transformer design
  • At least 7 years’ post-graduate experience in the electrical heavy current and high voltage industry
  • Knowledge of electrical and mechanical calculations, including material characteristics and equipment used in distribution, small and medium power transformers and mini-substations
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes applied in distribution, small and medium power transformers and mini-substations
  • Knowledge of testing procedures and standards requirements for transformers and mini-substations
  • Advanced AutoCAD experience
  • SolidWorks & Syspro experience
  • Proficient in MS Office and MS Project
  • Knowledge and ability to support the flow process between different areas of the company
  • Personnel management experience in a supervisory role
  • Legal and valid driver’s licence

Key Accountabilities But not limited to

  • Execute complete mechanical designs for enclosures, LV panels and miniature substations
  • Design new miniature substations through calculations, considering material characteristics and equipment
  • Interpret customer technical specifications and assist with tenders and enquiries
  • Support the design and manufacture of final products after order placement
  • Interface technically with internal departments, customers and suppliers
  • Prepare mechanical calculations for equipment used in miniature substations
  • Optimise designs with cost calculations, considering available materials, techniques, stock availability and customer specifications
  • Analyse, interpret and maintain complex mini-substation design databases
  • Read and understand national and international standards applied to transformers and mini-substation design
  • Train and support personnel in mini-substation design, transformer design and system applications
  • Identify risks and opportunities within the design process and system applications
  • Provide technical information and interpret performance results from transformer and mini-substation testing
  • Work with customised engineering design software and advise on improvements
  • Coordinate quality checks and inspections during the manufacturing process
  • Conduct Strip & Quote assessments on mini-substations for repair, including inspections, condition assessments, result checks and failure reports
  • Assist Sales, Contract Administration, PCP, Purchasing and Manufacturing teams with relevant technical information
  • Assist with the preparation and review of technical standards used within the design section
  • Support product certification processes in South Africa
  • Represent the company in meetings with customers, suppliers and service providers on product performance and after-sales matters
