Kumba Iron Ore

We produce high-grade iron ore, the key component in steel widely used in construction and manufacturing across the world. Our activities include all aspects – exploration; mining; processing and blending; shipping; marketing and selling. In South Africa, we have mining operations in the Northern Cape province, as well as a head office in Rosebank, Gauteng, and a port operation in Saldanha Bay, Western Cape.

As our Junior Hydro-Geologist , your responsibilities will include but not limited to:

  • Consistently apply safety and health principles in all team interactions and take personal responsibility for the safety of self and others to ensure zero harm and elimination of fatalities.
  • Collect, capture, monitor, and report data related to dewatering infrastructure inspections. • Supervise and manage drilling and testing contractors by conducting SHEQ checks, logging drill chips, preparing drill sites, tracking budgets, and processing invoices.
  • Collaborate with hydrogeologists and geotechnical engineers to ensure that sufficient and relevant geohydrological data is collected, captured, and validated to facilitate geotechnical designs that meet international best practices.
  • Manage databases that include all pertinent data
  • Update the mine water balance report every month.
  • Manage ad-hoc hydrogeological and geotechnical tasks as needed.
  • Establish and maintain a hydrogeological monitoring system.
  • Implement and monitor the dewatering strategy.
  • Develop and manage a fieldwork program.
  • Manage contractors effectively.
  • Generate weekly and monthly reports.
  • Manage databases that include WIMS and dewatering spreadsheets.
  • Create water balance models using Goldsim, WAF, WIMS, and Excel models.
  • Implement a hydrogeological monitoring system that includes telemetry, transducers, and other systems.
  • Perform any other relevant tasks that the individual is competent in.
  • Ensure that the dewatering strategy goals are met.
  • Manage the contractors, oversee the data collection process, and perform safety checks as required.
  • Collaborate effectively with all service departments to ensure smooth functioning of the hydrogeological systems.
  • Conduct regular site visits to inspect and monitor the hydrogeological systems and work.
  • Transport geotechnical and geohydrological staff around the site as required.
  • Write memos and reports on the progress of the project.
  • Capture data in databases or water balance and ensure accuracy.
  • Utilise relevant geohydrological and geotechnical software to produce maps and reports with proficiency.
  • Assist with water task team functions to ensure timely completion of tasks.
  • Ensure that the contractor task objectives are achieved and report to the Specialist Hydrogeologist in charge.
  • Attend relevant meetings as required and consult with key individuals involved in the project.
  • Manage all fieldwork programmes effectively to ensure timely completion.
  • Maintain a Red Permit to perform duties and ensure compliance with all safety regulations.
  • Ensure that the weekly and monthly water level and flow data are collected, captured, and reported accurately.
  • Assist with the implementation of the water management plan to ensure the efficient use of water resources.
  • Regularly check the groundwater monitoring system.
  • Conduct and document VFLs for the contractors involved.
  • Monitor the progress of dewatering activities and ensure they are on target.
  • Prepare daily, weekly, and monthly reports as required.
  • Implement the dewatering strategy.
  • Conduct hydrogeological drilling and testing programs.
  • Collect, manage, and report hydrogeological data.
  • Prioritise safety and conduct regular inspections.
  • Meet the set targets for dewatering.
  • Prepare weekly and monthly reports on dewatering.
  • Compile monthly reports for the OPCO.
  • Update the analytical model as required.
  • Perform inspections and verify first-line checks (VFLs).
  • Update the relevant safety files and SHE documentation.
  • Ensure an appropriate level of slope stability and dewatering monitoring is undertaken.
  • Oversee the integrity of data collected and determine the impact/effectiveness of mine designs based on stability monitoring.
  • Maintain safety file and geohydrological procedures.
  • Maintain legal appointments and ensure legal requirements.

This role is in Discovery & Geosciences (GEO) department on a Band 7 (C5) level reporting to the Specialist Hydrogeologist (Sishen & Kolomela).

Qualifications

  • Grade 12
  • Relevant qualification in Hydrogeology
  • SA Drivers Licence

Technical Knowledge
