Job Purpose

This is an entry-level position for a newly graduated Engineer who will work under the guidance of the Lead Electrical Project Manager on electrical construction projects. You will gain hands-on exposure to the planning, coordination, and successful execution of electrical substation, reticulation, street lighting, overhead powerline, and renewable energy projects.

You will be part of a multidisciplinary team that delivers projects safely, efficiently, on time, and within budget — while complying with industry regulations and client requirements. The role involves engaging with various stakeholders and ensuring high-quality service delivery across all project phases.

Ampcor specialises in the construction, refurbishment and maintenance of electrical infrastructure — including distribution substations up to 132kV, 3kV DC Railway Traction substations, Overhead Power Lines up to 132kV, overhead and underground electrical reticulation, street lighting, and high mast lighting projects.

Established in 1995, Ampcor has successfully completed over 160 projects for electrical utilities, municipalities and government parastatals including Transnet, PRASA, SANRAL, and clients in the industrial sector.

Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Lead Project Manager, you will assist with and gain exposure to the following:

  • Planning, executing and managing electrical projects in line with statutory requirements and client specifications — from tender stage through to commissioning and handover
  • Preparation and submission of competitive tenders
  • Managing the technical interfaces of the project
  • Developing detailed project execution plans, construction programmes and resource allocation strategies
  • Ensuring that projects are executed in line with approved designs
  • Contributing electrical design inputs and solutions during the proposal phase
  • Managing design changes in accordance with Design Change Request requirements (scope management)
  • Attending Project Progress & Review Meetings across various project phases
  • Timeous procurement of project materials
  • Coordinating cross-functional teams, including engineers, technicians, field staff and subcontractors
  • Supervision of personnel and timekeeping
  • Submission of progress claims and attending to contractual matters
  • Managing project risks and compensation events
  • Ensuring Safety, Health, Environment & Quality (SHEQ) compliance
  • Adhering to Construction Regulations and other project-related compliance requirements
  • Conducting site inspections and ensuring quality control standards are met
  • Ensuring that technical tests are conducted in line with international standards and client requirements
  • Testing, commissioning and handover of projects to clients
  • Compiling all technical documentation required on the project, including maintenance and operational manuals
  • Preparing training material for client personnel
  • Supporting the resolution of project challenges, delays and technical issues

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Engineering. Electrical Engineering Degree/Diploma is advantageous but not mandatory
  • Prior experience is advantageous but not required
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, schematic drawings and Scopes of Work
  • Quick problem-solving and conflict resolution abilities
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong planning, coordination and administration skills
  • Valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel to project sites

R180,000 – R360,000 CTC per annum
