Our client, a well-established and fast-growing retail supermarket group, is seeking an experienced Supermarket Manager to oversee the overall operations, profitability, and performance of a busy retail store. The successful candidate will be responsible for driving sales, managing staff, controlling costs, maintaining stock availability, ensuring exceptional customer service, and delivering operational excellence across all departments.
This role requires a strong retail leader with proven supermarket management experience and the ability to manage multiple departments within a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
Store Operations Management
- Manage the daily operations of the supermarket to ensure efficient and profitable performance.
- Oversee all store departments, including Grocery, Fresh Foods, Produce, Bakery, Butchery, Deli, and Front-End Operations.
- Ensure high standards of merchandising, housekeeping, and store presentation.
- Monitor operational efficiencies and implement continuous improvement initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and operational standards.
Sales & Profitability
- Drive sales growth and achieve store revenue targets.
- Monitor departmental performance and profitability.
- Analyse sales trends and implement strategies to increase turnover and customer spend.
- Manage gross profit margins and identify opportunities to improve profitability.
- Control expenses and reduce operational wastage.
Stock Control & Inventory Management
- Ensure optimal stock availability and product assortment.
- Monitor stock ordering, receiving, replenishment, and stock rotation processes.
- Conduct regular stock counts and investigate variances.
- Minimise shrinkage, losses, and stock wastage.
- Ensure inventory accuracy and effective stock management practices.
Team Leadership & Staff Management
- Lead, motivate, and develop store management and staff.
- Manage workforce planning, scheduling, attendance, and productivity.
- Conduct performance reviews and implement staff development plans.
- Recruit, train, and mentor employees to ensure operational success.
- Foster a positive, customer-focused workplace culture.
Customer Service Excellence
- Ensure exceptional customer service standards throughout the store.
- Resolve customer complaints and service-related issues promptly and professionally.
- Implement initiatives to improve customer satisfaction and loyalty.
- Monitor customer feedback and identify opportunities for improvement.
Financial & Administrative Management
- Manage store budgets and financial performance.
- Monitor cash handling, banking, and financial controls.
- Prepare and review operational and management reports.
- Ensure compliance with company financial policies and procedures.
- Analyse key performance indicators and implement corrective actions where necessary.
Health, Safety & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.
- Maintain food safety, hygiene, and quality standards across all departments.
- Ensure compliance with labour legislation and company policies.
- Conduct regular store audits and inspections.
- Promote a safe working environment for staff and customers.
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 (Matric).
- Relevant Retail Management qualification will be advantageous.
- Minimum 5 years' experience in a Supermarket Manager, Store Manager, or Retail Operations Management role.
- Experience managing a high-volume supermarket or retail store.
- Strong knowledge of retail operations, merchandising, stock control, and customer service.
- Experience managing multiple departments within a retail environment.
- Sound financial management and budgeting experience.
- Computer literacy, including Microsoft Office and retail management systems.
- Valid driver's licence and own reliable transport.
