Mathematics Senior Phase (Grades 8–9) and Mathematical Literacy Teacher

We are seeking a passionate, skilled and dedicated Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy Teacher to join our team. The successful candidate will teach Mathematics to Grade 8 and 9 and Mathematical Literacy to Grades 10 and 11 students, delivering engaging and academically rigorous lessons that strengthen numerical fluency, problem-solving, logical reasoning and critical-thinking skills.

The role requires a teacher who is committed to high standards, meaningful student relationships and creating a dynamic, inclusive classroom environment. Experience in an independent or IEB school environment will be advantageous but is not essential.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver high-quality Mathematics and Mathematical Literacy lessons for Grades 8 and 9, aligned with CAPS and school curriculum requirements.
  • Develop students’ understanding of number, algebra, geometry, measurement, data handling and financial mathematics through engaging and relevant learning experiences.
  • Strengthen students’ problem-solving, reasoning, mathematical communication and application skills.
  • Design, administer and mark formative and summative assessments in line with school assessment and moderation requirements.
  • Provide constructive, timely feedback to support student progress and academic growth.
  • Monitor student performance, identify learning barriers and implement appropriate support or intervention strategies.
  • Maintain accurate academic records and communicate student progress professionally with parents and guardians.
  • Create a positive, inclusive and well-managed classroom environment that promotes participation, accountability and respect.
  • Collaborate with colleagues on curriculum planning, moderation, interdisciplinary learning opportunities and school initiatives.
  • Participate actively in staff development, academic meetings, school events and co-curricular programmes.
  • Remain informed of current developments in Mathematics education, assessment practice and curriculum requirements.

Requirements

  • A relevant undergraduate degree in Education, Mathematics, Mathematical Literacy or a related field.
  • A recognised professional teaching qualification.
  • Current SACE registration.
  • Demonstrable experience teaching Mathematics at Senior Phase level, preferably Grades 8 and 9.
  • Sound knowledge of CAPS and South African assessment practices.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to plan effectively for a range of learning needs and support students with varying levels of ability.
  • Confidence in using digital tools and learning platforms to support teaching, assessment and communication.
  • A commitment to student wellbeing, inclusion and academic excellence.

Preferred Qualifications and Experience

  • Experience in an independent or IEB school environment.
  • Additional qualifications or postgraduate studies in Mathematics, Mathematics Education, Statistics, Commerce, Education or a related field.
  • Experience in assessment design, moderation and academic intervention.
  • Experience in teaching financial mathematics, data handling, algebra, geometry or applied mathematical problem-solving.
  • Participation in sport, cultural, service or other co-curricular activities.
  • Experience using educational technology and online learning platforms.
