Overall Purpose of the job
The Electronics Technician is responsible for the testing, troubleshooting, repairing and modification of electronic equipment, parts, components and systems according to engineering instructions and customer specifications
Minimum qualifications and experience
- Associated Degree or Diploma in Electronics with 5+ years of demonstrated relevant experience
- Computer literate with knowledge of IT networks and terminology
- Experience in the maintenance and upgrade of Computer hardware and operating systems/applications
Job Requirements & Other Attributes
- The ability/skill to troubleshoot PCB’s to component level using various test equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret electronic schematic diagrams
- Use of Power Supplies, Oscilloscopes, Signal generators, Digital MultiMeters and frequency Counters
- Knowledge of proper PCB board/component handling and ESD prevention practices
- Experience setting up and conducting various intricate PCB test configurations using test leads and fixtures
- Hands-on problem-solving style
- Self-motivated and self-directed, requiring minimal oversight to meet objectives and timelines
- Keeping current with applicable technology
- Valid code 08 driver’s licence
- Must be PSIRA registered (minimum - Grade C)
- Attendance of specified training for further certification
- Understanding and Daily Adherence to contractual earnestness clauses
- Acceptance of and agreement to regular Clearance checks including polygraphs
- Excellent verbal communication skills and be able to do report writing
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy in work
- Build and maintain good relationships with Internal and External Customers
- Serious regard for chain of command reporting for example the understanding that altering or adjusting equipment, altering testing procedures or processes may not be done without Managerial approval
Main duties & Responsibilities
- Perform complex technical functions in support of engineering activities such as set-up, operation, maintenance, modification, circuit testing, calibration and troubleshooting of electronic or electro-mechanical components and systems, experimental design circuitry, prototype models or specialized test equipment
- Perform incoming inspection, testing and repair of faulty systems and equipment received from Customers or Service Technicians, using approved testing procedures and schematics
- Repair or replace defective or improperly functioning equipment that failed inspection, as per Supplier Technical specification
- Setting up of specific test apparatus or test equipment to conduct functional, operational and soak tests to evaluate performance and reliability of complete systems and individual components
- Work from schematics, diagrams, written and verbal instructions
- Analyse and interpret test results and data in order to modify and adjust equipment functions to perform to specific Customer requirements
- Fabricate the necessary cables and jigs for use with test equipment and assemblies as needed
- Complete the required paperwork and test records for all tested equipment
- Load and configure software utilities or applications used for the testing and certification of equipment and components as per Supplier specifications
- Order and maintain inventory of replacement parts for electronic equipment repairs
- Maintain warranty, service and repair records
- Perform quality checks on repaired equipment to ensure proper operation
- Responsible for delivering set objectives and to report progress on the delivery of these as agreed with your Line Manager
- To assist with product and related training activities and technical support
- To propose solutions for the improvement of repair and test procedures to shorten turnaround times
- To identify and suggest improvements on training practices and documentation
- Test documentation and procedures may NOT be altered without your Line Manager’s approval.
- To ensure that all materials are controlled to eliminate losses and that any excess material is returned to stores
- Maintain a high standard and neat workshop environment
- Abide by company’s Health and Safety policy and procedures
- Contribute to team effort by performing other tasks as appropriate and/or required
- Tactical planning for effective and efficient completion to ensure required delivery dates are met
- Management of stock including weekly stock take & replenishment to ensure stock levels do not pass approved minimum stock levels
- Use & Manage incident management system to ensure all jobs completed in the approved, allocated time thus ensuring no overdue jobs
- Communication of job status and ensure necessary updates done on jobs via incident management system as well as daily/weekly/monthly reports
- Manage tools and ensure the right tool is used for the job at hand
