Administrator (Contract post, 2.5 years)

in the Rhodes African Studies Centre

The Rhodes African Studies Centre invite suitably qualified candidates to join their team.

Main Objectives

To provide effective and efficient financial and administrative control and reporting for the Centre in accordance with the University’s policies and procedures and according to the funder’s requirements and deadlines, and to produce accurate and timeous financial reports, prepared in accordance with the funder’s and the University’s guidelines. Simultaneously, to provide administrative support to the Director of the Centre, the postgraduate students and postdoctoral fellows of the Centre, and academic members and other individuals/groups requiring the services/products of the Centre.

The Requirements

A minimum of Grade 12 (preferably with Accounting) plus approximately 4 years’ relevant experience, where such experience includes: -

  • A thorough understanding of accounting principles, with the ability to consolidate sets of accounts in the required format/s. The ability to investigate and reconcile multiple accounts is essential.
  • Previous experience in working within a computerized accounting environment and having worked with Excel at least at an intermediate level.
  • Previous experience in working with word-processing (including being able to create and maintain databases), e-mail, and the internet.
  • Previous experience in setting up and maintaining electronic filing and administrative systems.
  • Previous experience in reconciling/auditing accounts in a research-based institution
  • Previous experience in organizing events and travel arrangements.
  • Previous experience in communicating effectively with a variety of high-ranking external research funding partners and senior scholars.
  • Previous experience in the use of social media and websites for marketing purposes, designing websites, and creating graphics would be an added advantage.
  • Experience coordinating and/or supervising staff.

Remuneration per annum (Grade 10)

Basic Pensionable Salary per annum: R367,497.00

Cost to Company per annum (Approximately): R499,206.00
