Underground & Surface Safety Officer

A leading underground hard-rock mining operation in Burgersfort is seeking two experienced and highly motivated Safety Officers to join its SHEQ team.

The successful candidates will be responsible for promoting a strong safety culture, ensuring compliance with legal and operational requirements, conducting inspections and audits, facilitating risk management processes, and supporting continuous improvement initiatives across underground and surface mining operations.

Both Day Shift and Night Shift opportunities are available.

Key Responsibilities

Safety Management & Compliance

  • Monitor and enforce compliance with the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA)
  • Conduct workplace inspections, audits, and compliance assessments
  • Identify workplace hazards and ensure implementation of appropriate controls
  • Assist with the implementation and maintenance of Safety Management Systems
  • Ensure compliance with Codes of Practice (COPs), SOPs, and site standards
  • Support legal compliance audits and corrective action tracking

Risk Management & Incident Investigation

  • Conduct risk assessments and hazard identification processes
  • Investigate incidents, accidents, and near misses
  • Compile incident reports and monitor corrective actions
  • Analyse and report on safety performance trends and indicators

Operational Safety Support

  • Conduct underground and surface safety inspections
  • Monitor Trackless Mobile Machinery (TMM) compliance
  • Verify compliance with ground control and ventilation requirements
  • Participate in emergency preparedness and response activities
  • Ensure contractor compliance with site safety standards

Training & Awareness

  • Conduct safety inductions and toolbox talks
  • Facilitate safety awareness campaigns
  • Support behavioural safety programmes
  • Assist with employee training and engagement initiatives

Minimum Requirements

Qualifications

  • Grade 12 (Matric)
  • SAMTRAC
  • COMSOC 1 & COMSOC 2
  • Risk Assessment Training
  • Incident Investigation Training (RCAT)
  • First Aid Level 1
  • Computer Literacy (MS Office)

Experience

  • Minimum 3 years' experience in underground hard-rock mining
  • Previous experience as a Safety Officer within an underground mining environment
  • Experience conducting inspections, audits, risk assessments, and incident investigations

Essential Certification

  • Valid Underground Mining Blasting Certificate
