What You Will Get To Do

Duties

Reporting to, and under the direction of, the Supervisor of By-law and Animal Services, the Animal Shelter Coordinator is primarily responsible for the supervision of daily operation of the Town of Whitby’s Animal Shelter, as well as overseeing administrative functions including animal licensing and associated software. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

  • the care and well-being of animals at the shelter, including feeding, cleaning, administering medicine and keeping daily health records for all animals;
  • assessing animal health and temperament upon intake;
  • coordinating the animal licensing program;
  • promoting animal adoptions through the Town’s website, social media, special events and programs;
  • answering and responding to calls and inquiries from the public, Town departments and other agencies, including law enforcement;
  • providing education, advice and assistance to the public;
  • coordinating the purchase and tracking inventory of all kennel, office and licensing supplies;
  • maintaining records of resident reports of lost and found pets;
  • coordinating vet appointments for spays/neuters and any associated animal pick-ups;
  • performing general janitorial duties inside and outside the shelter, including sweeping, mopping, dusting, vacuuming, windows, grounds keeping and snow clearing;
  • preparing/coordinating daily deposits of cash received by Animal Services including daily cash reports;
  • making recommendations for budget preparation for Animal Services Division;
  • ensuring that all Town and provincial policies, practices and guidelines are being adhered to in relation to animal care. Responsible to oversee all Health and Safety matters at the shelter;
  • ensuring provision of Animal Care and Husbandry is consistent with best practices and the guidelines established by the Canadian Council of Animal Care;
  • coordinating inspections with the Ministry of Rural Affairs;
  • developing, under the guidance of the Manager of Enforcement Services, an education program, with promotional materials, for local public schools and volunteer programs for Animal Services;
  • coordinating and monitoring volunteer programs;
  • implementing a Responsible Pet Ownership program for Schools; and
  • other duties as assigned.

Our Animal Services team is looking for a self-motivated, solutions-oriented team player. You convey your thoughts clearly and concisely, both written and verbally. You listen attentively and ask questions for clarification and understanding. Using sound judgment, you demonstrate tact, diplomacy and sound discretion when working with the general public on issues of a sensitive nature.

You’re always happy to learn new thing s and to help build a working environment that encourages and cultivates new ideas. You foster a collaborative team environment among co-workers, and work well both independently and as part of a team. You solve problems by identifying, gathering and processing relevant information to determine possible solutions, evaluate them and make recommendations.

What You Bring To Our Team

As the successful applicant, you must possess:

  • a post-secondary diploma or degree in veterinary technician, police foundations or law and security administration or Animal Care certificate with several years of municipal shelter experience;
  • a minimum of two (2) years of related municipal shelter experience, including animal care and administration;
  • a designation as a registered Veterinary Technician (OVAT) preferred;
  • working knowledge of municipal by-laws and provincial regulations;
  • working knowledge of the care, behaviour and keeping of animals;
  • working knowledge and understanding of computers and related applications, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Access, Outlook);
  • the ability to lift and move heavy items and to climb;
  • a valid Class “G” Driver’s Licence maintained in good standing.

Salary Range/Hourly Rate

$33.74 - $42.20

Flex hours, including days, afternoons, and nights, forty (40) hours per week. Shifts may be scheduled between the hours of 12:00 a.m. and 11:59 p.m., Sunday to Saturday.
