SUMMARY
ROLE PURPOSE
The Project Manager is the single point of accountability for the end-to-end delivery of large-scale, multi-disciplinary construction projects from award through to commissioning, handover, and close-out.
The role is responsible for integrating engineering, procurement, construction, commissioning, commercial, financial, and administrative functions to achieve project objectives across scope, schedule, cost, quality, SHEQ, and client satisfaction.
The Project Manager provides overall leadership, sets the delivery strategy, approves the project baseline, and ensures alignment across all project disciplines while protecting profitability, contractual entitlement, and delivery certainty.
Requirements And Professional Registration And Qualifications
Tertiary Education (Mandatory)
National Diploma / B.Tech / Bachelor’s Degree in:
- Construction Management
- Project Management
- Engineering or related built environment discipline
Professional Registration (Advantageous)
- SACPCMP (Pr.PM or Pr.CPM)
- PMP or equivalent certification
Additional Strong Preference
- Formal commercial/contract management training (FIDIC, NEC).
Experience
- 10–15 years’ experience in multi-disciplinary construction or infrastructure project delivery.
- Proven delivery of projects from inception through commissioning and close-out.
- Strong commercial, contractual, and financial management experience.
- Demonstrated leadership of multidisciplinary teams.
- Experience in HV transmission, substations, or infrastructure projects (Eskom/NTCSA/IPP) is highly advantageous.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Project Leadership & Governance
- Lead projects from mobilisation to close-out with full accountability for performance.
- Establish project delivery strategy, governance structures, and reporting frameworks.
- Maintain full visibility of progress, risks, constraints, and forecast outcomes.
- Drive intervention and recovery strategies where required.
Project Planning & Baseline Management
- Approve integrated project baselines (scope, schedule, cost, and execution strategy).
- Ensure alignment across engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning.
- Lead formal reviews to identify risks and implement mitigation measures.
Commercial & Contractual Management
- Own the project’s contractual and commercial position.
- Manage claims, variations, notices, EOTs, and entitlement preservation.
- Ensure disciplined contract administration and risk mitigation aligned to NEC/FIDIC/JBCC frameworks.
Project Financial Management
- Accountable for budget control, forecasting, cost-to-complete, and cash flow.
- Protect margins and drive cost optimisation across project activities.
- Ensure accurate reporting aligned with site realities.
Engineering & Technical Integration
- Ensure technical alignment between design, procurement, and construction.
- Govern engineering deliverables, technical queries, and design changes.
- Chair technical interface and decision forums.
Construction Delivery Leadership
- Lead delivery through Project Construction Managers and site teams.
- Ensure execution discipline, productivity, safety, and quality performance.
- Intervene in critical site issues without replacing site leadership roles.
Procurement & Supply Chain Oversight
- Oversee procurement strategies, long-lead items, and supplier performance.
- Ensure alignment between engineering approvals and construction requirements.
- Drive intervention on critical supply chain risks.
Stakeholder & Client Management
- Act as the primary senior interface with Clients and key stakeholders.
- Lead strategic engagements, progress meetings, and issue resolution.
- Ensure communication is structured, accurate, and contractually aligned.
People Leadership
- Lead and develop Project Managers, Construction Managers, and support teams.
- Drive accountability, performance, and succession planning.
- Promote a culture of safety, planning discipline, and delivery excellence.
SHEQ, Commissioning & Close-Out
- Ensure compliance with SHEQ, regulatory, and client requirements.
- Oversee commissioning readiness, handover, and documentation.
- Lead close-out, lessons learned, and final account support.
CORE EXPERIENCE
Technical & Functional
- End-to-end project lifecycle management.
- Contractual frameworks (NEC / FIDIC / JBCC).
- Financial control, forecasting, and cash flow management.
- Construction planning, sequencing, and execution readiness.
- Project controls systems (MS Project / Primavera / Candy / BuildSmart).
